Midweek Madness - Brock James: Great moustache, terrible kick

Clermont lost 16-11 to Ulster in Belfast on Saturday as the hosts scored all their points through flyhalf Ian Humphreys. Clermont struggled with their kicking as Morgan Parra and Brock James both missed a few. This was the worst of those efforts from James.

As it's Movember you will have noticed a lot of players, colleagues, and strangers growing rather interesting moustaches. French coach Mark Lievremont was a month off as he sported his during the RWC, but he set the tone for what has been quite an amusing few weeks.

Australian flyhalf Brock James has made a good effort with his, and it actually suits him which is more than can be said for a few others we've spotted. After this game it wasn't James' facial fair that was being discussed though, it was this howler of a kick.

During the world cup in New Zealand brilliant Scottish goalkicker Chris Paterson had a shocker against Romania as he just about scored a 'goal' in footballing terms, but had it stopped before it even crossed the tryline.

James' attempt was a bit further out but just as amusing. It's hard to know what caused it, but it certainly didn't help Clermont's cause any as the game was tight right up until the end, with Humphreys scoring an excellent winning try after a fantastic midfield break from Adam D'arcy.

After the game Clermont lock Nathan Hines said that their kickers weren't to blame for the loss. "You can't rely on you place kickers," he said. Perhaps he's intimidated by the tache.

Give that man a scrum cap and stick him in the forwards, he just passed the number 1 test!

I second nhunter, Paterson's kick wasn't exactly his fault as it did roll off the tee just before!

Chris Paterson's kick in the RWC against Romania was not a poor kick, as it first appeared pre-replay. The ball rolled off the tee before it was even kicked. This is completely different as the ball did not move.

As a kicker myself I have to admit I have done the same when at the edge of my range. It is incredibly embarrassing and people tend to remember one kick like this over hundreds or successful penalties.

There were other poor kicks by him during the game too. I wonder why Skrela had to go to the bench, he kicked and played well in my opinion

    I kick exactly like that.
The problem is that I'm a prop, he's a friggin' fly half!

He kicked that like someone out of the Village People... Wonder if he is wearing a black leather cap during November as well.

Reminds me of a Top14 game few weeks ago, the ball started to fall as the kicker stepped forward, and he kicked it low and straight ahead, right under the posts !
But here, really... Not good for Brock James self-confidence.

As the commentator said: this happens when you try to put too much power in the kick, it just goes completely wrong. Happens all the time to amateurs. The pros train so much that you don't see this kind of miss very often.
