Midweek Madness - How to get the opposition prop sent off

Portugal climbed three places to 21st on the official IRB World Rankings after their 28-22 victory over Chile in Santiago on Saturday. They won the game despite having a player red carded in the second half for a head butt.

Portugal actually passed Chile on the rankings a week before this game when they beat Uruguay, taking them up to 24th place as the race for a Rugby World Cup 2015 place hots up.

The 2007 Rugby World Cup side swapped places with Namibia, who dropped to 24th position after their dramatic 38-37 loss to Spain at home in Windhoek. Chile now sit at 25th, with Portugal at 21st.

In front of 2000 fans in Santiago, each side scored a try a piece and it was Chile that led 16-9 at the break thanks to a Pablo Huete try. Portugal came back strong in the second half though as they scored through Gonçalo Foro, and the boot of Pedro Leal.

They did well to win this one after prop Francisco Fernandes was sent off for an attempted head butt on opposition front rower Francisco Deformes, in quite comical circumstances.

Fernandes was clearly already wound up before being pushed over. He threw a bit of a short jab but missed, and was then slapped at and mocked before finally losing it, and missing with the head butt.

Looks like a mirror image of those worlds in Super Mario Brothers where those green guys throw hammers at Mario.

Lol, surprised no ones commented on the fact that the hairy prop ends up headbutting his own player as he's pushed backwards... 2 headbutts in the space of a minute...

He briefly played for Mounts Bay (Cornwall, England) where we simply called him "Bruto"

Hi mrabs, Unfortunately it's not feasible to do that at this stage, especially when some weekend's there's up to 16 internationals taking place.

If users submit random moments though, like this one, they will possibly be posted.

    Cheers

This is a case of a big hairy bully getting caught out. His shove on the scrum-half comes first, then he's embarrassed when someone his own size comes in and puts him on his arse.

The Chilean Mo-bro's "gay slaps" (copyright Brian Moore) seem intended only to keep Fernandes at arm's length. He's moving backwards the whole time.

It is a cracking Mo though. Along with his boxing technique it really adds to the Edwardian gentleman persona.

And for those wondering about Deforme's excellent tache... It's not because it's Movember, it's because this is Chile!! Haha

There was a fight in the Super XV this year or last year that was started by a big slap from a front rower on a 7 I think, and as I remember it the instigator got away with it

Sorry Green Mafia I totally disagree with you. Fernandes (?) was in front of the ball, off to the side and nothing to do with the ruck, blocking defenders from getting into guard positions. The Chilean players push him out of their way which is something we see dozens of times every weekend, and Fernandes comes back up with a punch before following the retreating Chilean player. His only options were to fight back and accept a card himself or buy time, his technique is silly but we have so often seen open hand slaps go unpunished because they arent dangerous I assume

No, stroudos, portuguese all the way.
Couldn't catch the match, so I can't really tell what was the reason the scrap between fernandes and the scrumhalf, but there should be a card for the chilean prop. But while I think the red was fair for that stupid hotead fernandes, regardless of if he landed the headbutt or not (and I hope he doesn't get banned, he's a usefull player), the chilean prop went in and continued the fight actually landing some blows (the degree of sissyness and ridicule of a blow should not change the fact that he deserves punishment, as it is promoting the fight to continue, as it did, since he wound up the hairy prop). That should be followed by a yellow, as we have seen happen many times in club and international rugby

  • 12:27 AM 22/11/2012

The push is illegal and the chilean landed a couple of jabs and slaps (lame, sissy ones, but still illegal). And even if he was trying to clear the hairy prop, he is doing it illegally AND from the side. The correct thing would have been red and yellow for the stupid ass portuguese prop (who is lucky if he doesnt get a ban) and the sissy wind up artist chilean respectivelly

i dont understand Green Mafias comments - if Hairy Prop is daft enough to react, he deserves all he gets. If the Chilean prop had hit him, he would have gone too. I rather like the way the Chilean prop (who has a fine moustache, by the way) pushes him out of the way because Hairy is on the wrong side of the ruck. Then Hairy reacts.

I disagree. Looks to me more like Adam Jones, sorry, I mean Fernandes starts it all having a go at the little scrum-half.

PS I always assumed from your name that you were Irish. Congratulations on the games/rankings.

I love it how the portuguese prop gets a card for his headbutt (deserved that) but the chilean guy with his cheapshot pushes, teasing and girly slaps gets nothing. Maybe the referee thought that his slaps were too ridiculous and that it was penalty enough for him to be on tv doing that? Either way, he was the initiator and should also be sent off (even if the infractions weren't in the same degree). Good to see the rest of my contrymen decided to respond by kicking their buttocks both in the game and in the rankings
