Midweek Madness - Referee stops counter attack when instinct kicks in

Alex Ruiz found himself perfectly positioned to take the pass when New Zealand faced Canada at the Singapore Sevens recently. The only problem? He was the referee.

Instinct kicked in, and for that split second Mr Ruiz probably felt like this was his moment - a chance to score for the All Blacks 7s team! Alas, he had to blow his own whistle.

Earlier this year New Zealand won the Sydney 7s after they had an extra man on the field against Australia and the officials missed it. No chance of that happening this time around!

Wouldn't it have been a scrum to NZ even if it had just hit the ref without him catching it?

James Haskell wouldn't have caught that.

Ref wanting to get a bit of attention?

No need for him to almost stop to take the pass. By the look on the face of the player who threw the pass (which, although wasn't the best pass, could well have been caught by the NZ player), he thought so too!

There's one like that on here somewhere from last year, also NZ sevens, but the ref left him hanging

Looked like Ruiz saved the NZ player's blushes to me. That was a shit pass that had already eluded the player running onto it - the ref was to the player's left after all.

reffing a club game one time one of the ladies made a break and I was chasing the play, and was actually the closest to her as she touched down. When I put my hand up to award the try she popped up and gave me a high five. It was hilarious.
