Much will be made about the incredible match between the Crusaders and the Waratahs today in what will go down as one of the most exciting games in Super Rugby history. But sometimes, there are things more important than rugby.
Setting aside all the jubilation, excitement and disappointment that comes from such an occasion, there will be time for many in the rugby community to reflect over the next few days after the passing of Richie Mo'unga's father.
Currently plying his trade in Japan for the Toshiba Brave Lupus, Mo'unga announced earlier today that he will not be playing against Ardie Savea’s Kobe Steelers on Sunday due to his father's passing. Writing on social media, Richie said:
"On Friday 12th of April 2024, our Dad took his last breath in the arms of our strong and courageous mum. Our hearts are absolutely broken but we are at peace that dad is finally free from pain."
During a post match interview with former All Black player Sonny Bill Williams, ex-teammate of Richie Mo'unga, Mitchell Drummond, passed on what was clearly a difficult and emotional message to the Mo'unga family.
Sonny Bill Williams opened the conversation, saying: “I just walk to talk about the initials on your armband. We've lost a great man in our community, [do] you want to talk a little bit about that brother?”
Clearly struck by the fresh news that it is, Drummond built up incredible courage to pass on his thoughts to the family, adding: “My best mate’s old man passed away so I want to shout out to the family and we’re thinking of you, and I'll send our love and best wishes for the next couple of weeks.”
A sentiment that was echoed by Williams and no doubt the rest of the rugby community.
