Montpellier and French international prop Mohamed Haouas has been placed in detention pending a trial in Montpellier, his lawyer has confirmed.
Held in custody since Friday, Haouas will be tried on Tuesday. Releasing a statement, his Lawyer Marc Gallix was quoted by the French publication L’Equipe as saying:
"The judge insisted that Friday's events were unequivocal. It's sad for him and for his wife, who will be coming to court on Tuesday to give evidence and hopes that things go well for their two children in particular,"
"A whole family will be destroyed if he is convicted," Gallix concluded.
Accused of kicking his wife in the leg to trip her before reportedly striking her in the face.
This incident follows a 2014 incident in which he was tried for aggravated assault and destruction of property.
At the time, the prosecutors described Haouas and the other defendants as “a pack of wolves attacking a man on the ground."
Surveillance footage showed that Haouas and his friends had beaten the man, who had allegedly attacked the rugby player, with fists, feet and iron bars.
He apologized for the offences, saying: "When you're young, you do stupid things."
In another instance, Haouas was handed an 18-month suspended sentence for receiving a stolen car and for taking part in a series of robberies of tobacconists in April 2014.
For the here and now, the alleged incident between Haouas and his partner was allegedly caught on camera and had several witnesses present.
On the pitch, Mohamed Haouas has previously gotten into a well publicized scrap with former Springbok and Montpellier hooker Bismarck Du Plessis.
If convicted, he could be handed a maximum of three years imprisonment.
