No drop goal in All Blacks armoury as Springboks pull off epic Test match win

The Springboks held on to edge the All Blacks 36-34 in one of the more dramatic Test matches in recent memory. It was a famous win away from home, with a number of records broken in the process. However, New Zealand's coaches are still puzzled as to why a late drop goal was not attempted.

South Africa came back from 12-0 down to lead 36-34 with minutes remaining in an outstanding contest in Wellington.

After an intense eighty minutes of rugby between two old foes, the All Blacks had one last chance at snatching the win after a relentless pounding of the Springboks immovable defensive line.

The obvious option was to attempt a drop goal, as that would have sealed a 37-34 home win. However, despite having prodigious talents such as Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie to turn to, they instead attempted to force a try. They came mighty close, but spilled a ball and the game was over.

Coach Steve Hansen was blunt as ever in his assessment of what happened.

"Should we have drop-kicked a goal? Yep, of course we should have. And we had plenty of opportunity to and we didn't organise ourselves," he said.

"What have we got to do when the clock's running down (and) the scoreboard's against us? We've just got to take a big breath and do things right and be clinical and, if we'd done that last night, we would've won the game. But we didn't."

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus saw it slightly differently.

"That's New Zealand. They were going for the try, that's the way they do things," he said. "It's a compliment to them. A drop goal is not the New Zealand way."

Replacement scrumhalf TJ Perenara, who was marshalling his troops at the end, said they had weighed up all options but saw space out wide.

"The chat to set up for a drop goal did definitely happen, but we get a picture that we back ourselves to score in," Perenara said. "And, looking back on it, I think it's still the right call."

Just watching the highlights here and didnt see the game but that looked like a no arms shoulder charge from Liam Squire on whiteley before the Dyanti try.  Did it go unpunished?

No penalty. But that was a borderline charge, in my opinion. The ugly one was right near the end, when Kieran Read charged into a ruck from the side, connecting his shoulder with Louw's head. It's precisely the kind of play they want to get rid of (following injuries to Warburton, Pocock etc) and it happened less than two meters from the ref, who was looking that way. No card, no penalty and no citing, which was pretty odd.

I don't think tactical errors in the end cost the AB's the game, but rather too many errors during the the previous 79 minutes. Giving away two intercept tries (while particularly the first one off the quick lineout by Jordie B. was very avoidable) proved too costly against a Springbok team that a) defended very well, and b) played very well in general. Also some very questionable defence by Jordie B. rushing out of the line at the last Springbok try. So I don't think the AB's need to change their game plan in any way, it's just that this time it wasn't quite enough.

In this game you have the answer to the question "Carter or Barrett at 10?".  Barrett is faster, better in defence and probably as good a distributor but with Carter the All Blacks would win this game every time.  I am a lifelong forward and hate the fact that goalkicking is so decisive in rugby (especially so in 7s) but given that's how the game is, the top team in the world needs someone on the park who they can rely on to bang them over, otherwise they are forced to play risky rugby (which the All Blacks do well) and that sometimes costs them.  That doesn't mean get rid of (Beauden) Barrett, just kick his brother out and stick him at 15.If I was faced with the prospect of kicking to a back three of Ben Smith, Beauden Barrett und Rieko Ioane (with Damien McKenzie to cover any injuries of them off the bench), I simply wouldn't bother!

I personally think Barrett is an exceptional 13 playing in the wrong position. I wouldn’t want to play outside him. He’s like the fast kid playing in a school team who hogs the ball. Exceptional talent however

This is really good for the game. Every nation needed to be reminded that every team is beatable and the kiwis needed to be brought down a peg or two (for their own benefit as much as everyone else) Perfect result

    What an unbelievable
game. Two Boks – Pieter-Steph du Toit and Franco Mostert – made more tackles
than the whole NZ team. To beat an AB side that scored six tries from 75% possession
isn’t something you’ll see too often. Granted, Barret probably won’t miss those
sitters again, and the other Barret will probably think twice before taking a
quick, long line-out throw. But still, that defence in the final quarter was
something else. I do think the AB’s missed Brodie Retallic a lot. And I think they
were silly to carry on with Squires after he had clearly hurt his arm/shoulder
quite badly. Last word on Dyantyi – what an amazing finisher. We seemed to have
    finally found our Habana replacement.

What a full on frantic game. They came to our home turf and stuck it to us. You can’t teach passion, they made 4x as many tackles as the AB’s, a few guys making 20+ tackles.... I don’t mind losing to that kind of heart!

Well done to the Boks! Defended staunchly till the bitter end. The All Blacks were always going to go for the try. Like Rassie said, it is the All Black way. That high octane, up tempo approach may have cost them the game this time, but it has undoubtedly won them more games than it has cost them.
