Old school highlights show just how brutal rugby really was in the 80s

A classic throwback to the 1987 Five Nations match between England and Wales in Cardiff highlights just how much the game has moved on in 30 years.

The following 12-minute highlights reel is essentially a montage of fights which by today’s standards would all be instant red cards and significant bans.

From the first whistle the match is not only a physical battle, but a kicking one too with both sides regularly taking the three points until Welsh prop Stuart Evans scored the decisive try in the second half.

Wales won the game 19-12 and eventually finished fourth in the championship ahead of England, who came bottom.
