Portugal to face world champions in thrilling one off test next summer

Reigning world champions South Africa have announced a thrilling three-test spectacle in July of next year, as they look to host  Ireland for two tests at Loftus and Kingspark, before hosting World Cup sensations Portugal in what is expected to be a sellout one-off occasion.

The dates are as follows:

South Africa vs Ireland: 1st Test - 6 July 2024 @ Loftus

South Africa vs Ireland: 2nd Test - 13 July 2024 @ Kingspark

South Africa vs Portugal: One-off test - 20 July 2024 @ TBC

Fans have been expressing their excitement surrounding the announcements, with the Portugal match, in particular, being seen as a major positive for the emerging rugby nation.

Twitter account 'Rugby Inside Line' summed up the thoughts of many, by saying: "Brilliant initiative to bring more nations onto the world stage. Martins vs Kolisi! The two biggest stars of the game…"

Another Twitter account, 'Tier 2 Rugby', said: "A first ever meeting between the teams in what will likely be a very rare fixture. An enormous challenge for the new Lobos coach to prepare a side for this with squad going through some rebuilding next year."

Following a months break from international action, the Springboks will then welcome southern-hemisphere rivals New Zealand and Argentina for another three tests.

Saturday, 7 September 2024: SA vs. New Zealand (DHL Stadium, Cape Town)

Saturday, 28 September 2024: SA vs. Argentina (Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit)
