South Africa Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus has suggested that his time on the side-lines as World Rugby’s “most well paid” water boy may continue.
No stranger to a controversy Erasmus appeared to be having some fun with his social media followers as he suggested he would change his title from “Director of Rugby” to “Director Of Coaching”.
Clearly in response to his suspension from World Rugby which runs until September 30th this year, Erasmus and SA Rugby appear to be looking for a loophole to allow him onto the field of play upon his return.
Following last year’s Lions series in which Erasmus’s antics both on and off the field game under immense scrutiny, World Rugby have been looking at ways to limit nonplaying personnel coming onto the pitch.
In direct response to this a new law which limits teams to two dedicated water carriers who can come on during stoppages of play.
The primary aim of the trial is limiting the disruption in matches due to several water carriers regularly coming on at each break.
The new law will also limit water breaks to two per half at a agreed points with the match officials and only during a stoppage in play or after a try is scored.
Players will however have access to water at any point behind their dead ball line or from within their technical zone at any time during the match.
As mentioned Erasmus will be serving a suspension until the 30th of September as a result of his hour long critique of the match officials in the first test of last year’s Lions series. This suspension will ensure that he will miss the Springboks first nine tests this year but he will be back ahead of their November series tests.
