Reece Hodge gets fed up with tee, does it himself for brilliant three points

The Queensland Reds got back in the win column Friday night, defeating the Melbourne Rebels 37-23 at Suncorp Stadium. One highlight for the Rebels, however, was this brilliant drop goal penalty from a quick-thinking Reece Hodge after the ball had fallen twice from the tee.

Hodge is squarely in the upper echelon of massive boots and his range is always a potent weapon. Although this wasn't the longest of kicks, his quickness of mind and casual way he slotted the 30-metre penalty, after the tee mishap, is the stuff of legend. 

Brad Thorn's squad picked up the bonus point victory with a penalty try and tries going to Izack Rodda, Filipo Daugunu, and Jono Lance.

Hodge did his part for the Rebels, scoring 13 with the boot. 

The Rebels loss means that the Waratahs can now breathe a little easier as they look to hold the top spot of the Australian conference.

    Finn Russell did exactly the same last year. Only drop goal he's ever scored, I think.

    I am very surprised that the attempted 'tackle' made by the 9 at 0.56 wasn't reviewed/penalised. Looks like a shoulder charge to me.

    Years ago, when the scoring system got changed so that mega points were more of a possibility, I thought that it would have been better to keep trys to four points, but placed kicked penalty kicks would be dropped to two, like in league, and three for dropped kicked penalty kicks. Think how a captain would be thinking about that one: go for two or three points, with two almost guaranteed at the highest levels of the game, but a dropped kick that much more difficult for that extra point. And why is a kicking tee really needed? Even in American professional football, field goals are kicked off the ground, as are conversions.

    Add in the speed of the ball leaving the foot and it's another two points. In baseball, though no score is given for it, speed of ball leaving bat is now being done by computers.

    World rugby has announced a retrospective award of 5.84 points for this kick, based on the fact it was a drop kick and it's distance from the posts as well as a temperature on the day.
