Richard Kahui makes another good hit, this time on Israel Folau

A week ago we saw Richard Kahui put in a huge tackle on Ben Tapuai of the Reds, which sparked a bit of debate on here over the legalities of it. On Friday he made another big tackle, this time on new Waratahs star Israel Folau.

Folau, already considered by many to be a contender for the Wallabies fullback spot, has been consistently performing since making the move to Union, after having played both League and AFL.

He played a big part in the Waratahs 25-20 win over the Chiefs, making a number of try-saving tackles and getting up high to take a pinpoint Bernard Foley crosskick, which resulted in a try.

Shortly before scoring his third try in four games, he got smashed by Kahui, who lined him up and timed the hit perfectly. Probably not the same impact as the Tapuai hit, but it's still great to see players like Kahui throwing everything into the tackle with little regard for his own body.

He was in doubt for the next round's 2012 final rematch against the Sharks after he injured his hamstring, but he has since been selected in the Chiefs starting XV.

There is a nice bump-off by Wycliff Palu at the beginning of this clip too, and as always, great stuff from commentator Rod Kafer as he explained how Kahui introduced himself.

    Agreed with many above, Kahui is gonna end up knocking himself out. Personally I use to try to make these kind of hits and now, I gotta say I don't really like them.

    Agreed he's only coming up at full speed, but I really think these kinda hits only end up causing long tern damage to the players involved...

    This is a question of health and safety overall for rugby players world wide. We all watch these games, and check out rugby dump. I don't want to see my kids receiving these kind of hits or delivering them and shaking their collective neurons.

    The Tackling Laws have evolved "since professionalism" to make tackling low a pointless execise [save for last ditch]

    Nowadays the only way to win possession seems to be to dislodge it with a big hit, Psuedo RL style, it's confrontational / brutal but has very little skill involved [other than timing] & I for one am turned off by this development in this code.

    In order to protect themselves & absorb such impacts players are wearing increasing greater amounts of padding, strapping & protection & i wonder where we are headed.

    hits instead of tackles zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    In all fairness... That's bollocks... He made it look like an "attempt" to wrap... You don't have to be a professional to wrap or not wrap, either way it is not an illegal tackle as you said so no penalties or citings...

    As the saying goes, "don't piss down my leg and tell me it's raining"

    The law doesn't even go that far; it just asks a tackler to "attempt to grasp" the player. Which of course, as you point out, Kahui has clearly done here.

    Not sure there's any knock-on here. Looks to me like Folau lost it backwards. When someone makes a thumper of a tackle like this, it should be play-on anyway in my opinion.

    On the legality of things it's fine on the face value it looked like he "attempted" but did he actually attempt, or did he make it look like he made an attempt... :/

    Not a shoulder charge IMO, just a poor tacke. Kahui attempt to wrap the player with his arms but his position is too bad to do it. To high, bad head position and he's not "straight" (can't really push with his legs). With a bigger dude instead of Folau, i think Kahui could have been smashed.

    He did half of the job here, Great anticipation but poor finishing with this tackle.

    Clearly not the kind of tackle you can show in tugby schools.

    I defended last weeks video quite strongly, but I think this tackle is notably worse than the last, not sure why, but he seems to be in a tensed and tight position before he makes the hit, and to me, that is what the shoulder charge laws are supposed to prevent.

    Ha I thought that too as he stumbled around in a circle, didn't look fit to drive after that.
    Admire the commitment, and he doesn't just save these big hits for the little guys either

    Looks like Kahui gave his own brains a bit of a rattling with this hit too. Looks a little less than stable on his feet after the hit.

    Gotta love this guys commitment to the tackle though. Week in week out he's smashing guy's and it's certainly not just those receiving them that feel the wallop! He's 110% for every hit.

    I'd imagine he lives in an ice bath!!
