Rodrigo Roncero puts Ronan O'Gara on his backside in 2008

Argentina prop Rodrigo Roncero is never far from the action, and although he's now 35 years old, he'll be one to keep an eye on in the upcoming Rugby Championship. Here's an amusing look at what happened with him a few years ago against Ireland.

Ireland beat Argentina 17-3 in the Autumn of 2008 in what was a tempered affair at Croke Park. Ronan O'Gara kicked 12 points and set up a try to claim the Man of the Match award.

He didn't make any friends out there though as he got himself in numerous tangles with Argentine players, and fiery front rower Roncero in particular.

As the game was petering out the prop and flyhalf appeared to get themselves in an off the ball scuffle, which was picked up by touch judge Mark Lawrence. A minute later Roncero found himself with ball in hand, and O'Gara, the target of his affections, directly in front of him.

It's not the first time we've seen ROG barged out the way but this one was quite spectacular as he went airborne, then came to ground and stuck a boot in Roncero's nether region.

What that did was set up an amusing situation as O'Gara was announced as man of the match while a handful of opposition players stood and took some shots at him, albeit verbally. He soaked it up and didn't show any signs of backing down as the banter and abuse flowed freely.

It appears as though Roncero was penalised for this charge, but it was actually for the scuffle before that, which wasn't caught on camera. Not long afterwards, Roncero dished out a few verbals to the touchjudge, which resulted in referee Bryce Lawrence sending him to the sinbin.

It was an eventful period of play and one that needed to be archived here, especially ahead of this weekend's Rugby Championship, where we will see Roncero strutting his stuff against South Africa.

Have a look at the related posts below for some huge fends, fights, and O'Gara being knocked down

guys....i have no idea how anybody in his right mind like or not the PUMAS or RONCERO could even begin to question this players rugby credentials on the pitch....in France or for Argentina he starts EVERY GAME juggernauter....ask Ayersa....really....your personal dislike is distorting an amazing performer throughout the years even in his twilight years....and not just his scrummaging but his damn tackling....just the sheer volume of tackles this first rower gets per game should already be one indication of how unusual and talented this beast of a player is....Cheers everyone....great site

I think with Sexton coming through ROG has got to fight for recognition. We saw it a last year or something when ROG really tried to get under Chris Ashtons skin, and actually succeeded....

Roncero is a bit of a thug, however he is talented, it is just a shame he does not keep his attitude together...

Thank you Reality... Some people just ask for trouble where there's not.

Juggernauter's not complaining about the Argentinian rugby team; he's saying that this one player is scum. And he's absolutely correct. Roncero is like the Jamie Cudmore of Argentina.

Although for destroying O'Gara here, I say, "Thank you, Rodrigo."

I was under the impression that O'Gara was getting more physical in the last year or so. Might be wrong though.

Have to say I have no respect whatsoever for players that don't know how to behave properly towards the match officials, no matter how wrong they might be in certain decisions. Leave the soccer-attitude on the soccer-pitch, please.

He says something like: the day Chile have a player like Roncero, we'll talk. I guess 'Chilota' means something like 'little Chilean' or so.

Sorry, it has been years since I last spoke some Spanish...might not be completely right here.

Looks like Roncero got a kick in the spuds for his troubles...

I must say that there are two of the biggest muppets in rugby world involved in this video.
First there's O'Gara, who, fine player that he is, can't tackle for shit and often uses weird strategies to get the opposite player down (often involving the use of the boot or the fists), and there's Roncero. Now I don't even rate him as a player. But he's an authentic thug.
You may not see him play a lot but here in Chile I watch rugby Tests in ESPN, which is taken up by argies and they just drool every time this clown takes to the field... And they show every frekin' game the Pumas play in, so I've been following Roncero for a number of years, and I can tell you, not a game goes by without this idiot getting into a scuffle, punching, stomping, shouting at the ref, and mainly heating up the opposition.

I am in fact no hater, but I just have zero respect for Roncero.

    Cheers

ROG did kick up at Roncero, but i thought Roncero went out of his way to turn and "place" his boot quite heavily towards ROG. Not keen on players stamping but when ROG kicks up at him into his sack, he shouldn't really expect much kindness back, sinbin/citing for both would be my decision

I remember that awful match. Tony Ward gave O'Gara the man-of-the-match award because in getting a yellow card for something idiotic he somehow demonstrated that he was the only one playing with passion.

And Michael, what are you on about? O'Gara stuck his studs into Roncero after he got flattened, and that's not the first time I've seen him do that. That yellow card at the end was ridiculous. The fact that the referee couldn't even get the card out of his pocket just added to the farce.

Michael must live in an alternate universe. ROG tried to kick the Argentinian. Shame Roncero didn't stamp on his nuts - he would have deserved it.

Really? What clip did you see? I couldn't see Roncero try and do anything to ROG, who should have been cited for kicking up at the Argentine. ROG is a good player but is one filthy cocky so and so, who i am more than happy to see get put on his arse time and time again.
