Ronan O'Mahony back heel flick sets up try for James Coughlan vs Edinburgh

This Munster try video has been doing the rounds since the weekend, exciting a lot of fans out there who have compared it to Simon Zebo's heel flick, and other great bits of skill. But was it intentional? Take a look for yourself and see what you think.

Munster beat Edinburgh 34-23 in the opening weekend of the RaboDirect PRO12, scoring five tries to two at Musgrave Park. There was one moment in particular that got the fans talking though.

James Coughlan scored in the first half after Ronan O'Mahony chased a Johne Murphy kick through. O'Mahony appeared to misjudge the bounce as he went to gather it, and it didn't quite sit up as hoped. Instead he ran over it, and somehow a trailing foot flicked it up perfectly for Coughlan.

Some fans have emailed RD saying it was a brilliant bit of skill, and that he was a great age group footballer so he must've intentionally flicked it up to his teammate.

    My opinion is that he meant to flick it back. It's more likely that he wanted to flick it back towards support, therefore away from the opposition. I doubt he could have expected that outcome.

    100% agree, he tried to do "anything" but also "nothing in particular" the fact it bobbled up, came off his heel and ended up in a team mates hands is testament to how awesome rugby can be...

    total mistake,
    no rugby player flicks a ball to a team mate behind him with the try line at his mercy.
    and if it was intentional he would have gotten a right bollocken from the coach and told never try anything like that again......

    It looked like he was waiting for the bounce but it never came so he then goes to put the flick in with his right foot but misses and then by some fluke gets the perfect bounce off his left. I'd put it down to luck, same way his little heel kick vs wales was.

    Who was it that said "the more i practice the luckier I get?"

    I don't know, it almost looks like he's trying to bring it forward slightly with his left boot so he can put it back in front of him with his right. But, maybe he did hear a call from his support and figured he'd pop it up in the air on chance.

    I desperately wish it was an intentional backheel, but I just don't see it myself. If the player said he did it on purpose though I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. He was definitely trying to play it with his feet, but I don't think he had any idea what part of his body he was hitting it with or where it was going.

    Well, he definitely didn't mean for that to happen, just tried to get something on the ball as it stuck under him. Doesn't come close to Zebo's tekkers.

    I'm with Tristan, rugby can sometimes be all about the very small things/actions and a great deal of luck. He tried a flick close to the oppos line with nothing to lose and knowing that 90% of the time it'll go wrong or end up in the wrong hands etc... this one just happened to come off. Great stuff.

    Complete fluke. Glad it worked out (even as an Edinburgh fan) because that is the beauty of sport. However I doubt in that split second he thought, let me kick it AWAY from the try line in the hope it falls perfectly into the arms of my team mate who I cant see.
