In a day and age where constant changes are being made to make rugby safer, it is refreshing to see a textbook tackle that is in no way dangerous. We saw an example of that when the Bulls hosted the Chiefs and Rosko Specman ran directly into powerful Chiefs tighthead, Nepo Laulala.
It is almost impossible to go through a game of rugby these days without a high or a no-arm tackle. As player welfare is paramount, the laws surrounding tackling have become more stringent, for good reason.
Specman was actually the recipient of a dangerous tackle just a few weeks back, when he was flung to the floor against the Sharks.

But there is nothing wrong with this tackle, as it is just an example of the effectiveness of good technique, and Specman was fine to continue the game.
Of course, there is a huge weight and size difference in this challenge, and Specman would often come out second best when running into a prop, but that can also lead to poor technique from the tackler, who would be more reliant on their weight in such a circumstance.
The Chiefs ran away comfortable 56-20 winners from this contest, but Laulala’s tackle is an example that good technique prevails.
