Ross Moriarty choke hold on Nicolas Sanchez mars Wales series win

It's been an interesting few days for Wales in the wake of their series win in Argentina. Their 30-12 victory finds them in third place in the world rankings behind New Zealand and Ireland. Unfortunately, a controversial moment marred the win as Ross Moriarty was shown a red card.

With the win and the series well in hand, Wales were defending against one last attack from Argentina in extra time. Things began to unravel after Nicolas Sanchez appeared to take exception to what he clearly viewed as an overly agressive clear out.

The live action shot and replays show Moriarty leaving his feet while falling over a ruck, perhaps even striking Sanchez in the process.

Ever the provocateur, the fly half followed with a chest-bump and extra shove for good measure. Things took a decidedly nasty turn with Moriarty then grabbing Sanchez from behind for several seconds in a choke hold that was "deliberate and around the neck."

He was warned three times to let Sanchez go, before prompting even the Pumas physio to step in - an action for which he was lucky to escape further admonition. When things calmed down, Jaco Peyper had no choice but to issue the harshest sanction available.

Even though it didn't matter, the Pumas took advantage and scored one last try, which Sanchez then converted.

The two embraced directly after the match, so apparently cooler heads had prevailed enough to leave the action on the field. Moriarty also issued an apology after the match.

"Sorry for my reaction at the end of the game... Extremely proud of this squad and our performances on tour. Didn't want to end it on that note!"

His reaction to those he accused of abuse on social media, however, was less than cordial. "I appreciate the hate messages... when you hide behind your keyboard you maggots."

On the other hand, the good news for Wales is that they've won the series and shot up to third in the world rankings, their highest position since October 2015.

Oliver - you have shown on hear before that you have no ability whatsoever to take a joke yourself, so you can't complain about other people not getting yours (regardless of whether or not they are any good)

You added a wonky face which is the same cocky little shit thing that 9's do when they've fucked over a forward with either a stamp, a slap, a punch or any other illegal act and have gotten away with it - or even better got the forward in trouble for retaliating.

I feel for Grosso, he's going to have a hard time recovering and remaining confident going forward carrying a horrific injury in his subconscious. But much like the Benjamin Fall incident, I'd imagine if you looked at it frame by frame, Tu'Ungafasi would have very little time to pull out. The resulting punishments for either incidents are as ambiguous and random as they can get given the supposed clarity of the laws...

Fair fight? The fight was 100% fair, regardless of whether you think Moriarty started the WHOLE thing with the flying shoulder, Sanchez started the fight between him and Moriarty, from that initial starting point what do you determine as fair? If this was one on one MMA style enclosure and these two stood toe to toe, I'd make a safe assumption that Sanchez is screwed... So how do you make that fair? Tie one of Moriartys arms behind his back? Sanchez started it, Moriarty got up, got him in a choke hold and whispered sweet nothings into his ear.

And yes I have been held by the throat, I have an older brother. Growing up I was the Sanchez in this scenario, starting shit when his back was turned, he was very Moriarty like, either holding a pillow over my face until I felt like I was about to die, or by pinning me against the wall holding my throat... Neither were "fair" situations, but like I said before, I played with fire, so I got burnt!

Look, I am not arguing your point that it was a bad move by Moriarty. Certainly uncomfortable to be held in a chokehold. To me it's just rather in the category of a scuffle than a murder attempt, so I don't see too much reason to get overly worked up about it.

were you grabbed by the neck though? i once received a fend-off there during a game and i can tell its an extremely sensitive area. it's almost like being kicked in the balls.

oh come on now i'm the one disappointed in you! the falklands thing was a joke, i even added a smiley to make it obvious. remember when you joked about grosso's injury, do you really think that was in better taste?
as for the heart of the matter: grabbing a guy by the neck from behind is a fair fight? ok then.

maybe you being a forward and me a former small 9 colors our opinions....so i'll leave it at that.

    10:52 AM 20/06/2018

Yeah, I still think there wasn't that much in it. A dick move is a dick move, it's just useless nonsense, but it's not like it was actually dangerous or there was any real harm done, so deal with it and move on. It wasn't even a proper fight or anything.
I have been grabbed and pushed by players way bigger than me, and believe it or not I have managed to shrug it off and get on with my life. So as much as I appreciate your concern for poor Sanchez, I think there's a good chance he'll also find a way to get through the trauma and soldier on, so I wouldn't worry too much about that...

And Sanchez knocking him over from behind and then falling onto his face with a punch or open hand was the most undick move out there?

I'd like to think my size and or behaviour would mean I wouldn't get caught in a choke hold by Moriarty...not to mention the fact I don't play international or professional club rugby..

"Cowardly considering size difference" oh Oliver, honestly, that is some grade A sensationalist bullshit if ever I've read it, I thought better of you! It's a rugby pitch, they're all grown men, if someone lays an unnecessary hand on me I'll come back at them as most people will do, regardless of their size... I'm not giving a little guy a free pass just because he's a cocky little shit who think his size will allow him to get away with things. Sanchez clearly felt he was big enough to push a man in the back and either accidentally or on purpose land on the guy's face... But all of a sudden he's an innocent victim of a big bad bully when it becomes a fair fight...

Why would any of the Welsh fans have hard feelings about the Falklands? The British best Argentina and now 'own' the 'Falklands'?

P.s. considering the crap that's happened to France both on the rugby pitch and off the rugby pitch both historically and extremely recently, I'm surprised that you'd take unnecessary jabs..

All red cards then have a citing meeting afterwards, and nearly always get a ban for a few weeks. Considering this happened in the 82nd minute there'll be no mitigating curcumstances that it affected the outcome of the game etc.

I suspect something like 12 weeks (make an example of not obeying the officials) reduced to 6 because of good record and wearing a suit & tie to the hearing. In reality he misses nothing except maybe the first pre-season friendly that he would probably be rested for because he went on tour.

I have to say I'm actually quite surprised at the number of comments supporting Moriarty?
He grabs Sanchez by the neck, from behind. It's a dick move. Even cowardly considering the size difference.
Then he refuses to obey the ref.
And then some you saying there's not much in it, over reaction and so on?? I wonder how you would feel if that was your neck on the line....

So any hard feelings left over the Falklands war or what?? ;-)

    yes, a ban.
Not respecting/disobeying the ref is the ultimate sin in rugby to me. Or else we will go the way of football with players surrounding the ref etc.

Actually you missed the part where the Argentinian player is on his knees in the ruck and not supporting his body weight (or was the tackled player and was performing the ol' squeeze ball) and not allowing Moriarty to compete properly, this means Moriarty loses his footing. With that in mind, red card for the Argie on the floor, downgraded to a yellow by referee, upgraded to red by TMO, booed at by fans, rescinded by half of Work rugby, reissued by the other half, and the reward is we're all handed a bunch of Tu tu's and a load of tiddlywinks

Indeed. Red for being fick. It's a common failing on the rugby pitch.

I also agree with DrG's point about playing with fire. Seems Sanchez was being a twat and got reminded who the bigger boy was.

Well said - I'm glad someone else noticed Moriarty's initial flying shoulder.

If he starts the whole thing with dangerous play and then chokes a guy and won't let go, the opposition should be allowed to kick his head in and he should be subsequently banned. As others mentioned, he was told to stop choking Sanchez several times and didn't stop, so either you wait to see how that unfolds, or you use physical force to get him off (Argentina no. 7).

    6:10 PM 19/06/2018

I get the need to stamp your authority on the smaller guy. That's part of the game. But when the officials and just about everyone else around you is telling you to stop choking the bloke and you just stare at them with dead eyes while continuing, then you really can't complain too much about red. In fact, Peyper was so upset by Moriarty's borderline psycho behaviour that I'm surprised this hasn't seen further action after the game.

  • oliver
    5:39 PM 19/06/2018

I agree. Moriarty starts it and most importantly, does not obey the ref, who is standing directly in front of him. That is the key thing in the whole incident.

It should be red + a ban IMO.

    3:19 PM 19/06/2018

Meh, I take it all back. Beer for Moriarty for the laugh it gave me seeing Sanchez' face, that look of "oh shit" and the realisation that had this been a real life or death situation, he well and truly was f*cked! Haha. Agree with Leggaj5, would love to know what he actually said!

  • pickay
    3:16 PM 19/06/2018

Yeah fair enough. I didn't pay enough attention to Moriarty initially flying in at the breakdown, but it really looks like Sanchez took exception to that and wasn't just being a jerk. So Moriarty should have maybe just left it at that then, and anyway he had heaps of time to let go the chokehold, but he chose not to...

  • thedoctor
    2:59 PM 19/06/2018

almost 100% agree. Sanchez starts it - pen to wales - Moriarty reacts - reverse pen and red just because of the attitude of not realising even when the touch ref told him to do so. This is the key of the incident, the attitude of Moriarty, not the action itself.

  • tigerinbirmingham
    2:32 PM 19/06/2018

IMO it wasn't Sanchez who starts it, it was Moriarty with the attempted flying shoulder/no handed clear out (2:39 mark, can see Sanchez appealing to the ref before he starts anything) - penalty to Argentina.

Sanchez takes exception and kicks off. Sanchez initially gives a shove and Moriarty stumbles (over prone man?) then when on the floor grabs Sanchez's legs bringing Sanchez down on top of him. I'm not convinced Sanchez even wanted to go in for the second bit of niggle. Penalty reversal and a word to both sides to calm it down, the clock is already red so chill.

Mortiarty grabs Sanchez by the neck and squeezes - another reversal and a yellow for deliberate and violent play. Moriarty is instructed by the officials to let go 3 times and refuses - upgrade to a red.

Argentine 7 comes in to enforce what the officials are incapable of - if Moriarty won't release when instructed then someone has to get Moriarty off Sanchez - frankly Josh Adams should have been in Moriarty's ear getting him to let go. 7 and the medic could quite easily have been reprimanded, I think they only got away with it because of the situation requiring physical intervention.

If Moriarty has stopped his chokehold as soon as the touch ref warned him,
the incident would have been: yellow for both to calm the temper.

Agree with the above. I don't think there was too much in it. It's not like Moriarty actually tried to choke Sanchez to death, he just held him in a chokehold. Which was obviously not the nicest thing to do, but to some extent Sanchez got what he deserved, after pushing Moriarty twice, including one to the face when Moriarty was already laying on his back. And then Arg 7 overreacted in the same way. So after everybody overreacting, maybe in the end the ref was the one overreacting the most...

almost 100% agree. I'd say, Sanchez starts it - pen to wales - Moriarty reacts too much - reverse pen. Arg 7 comes in - reverse pen again and yellow card (no need to get involved)

That look on Sanchez's face if priceless though.

Play with fire you get burnt...

...I guess this can be applied to every aspect of this situation.. Sanchez getting choked, Moriarty getting red carded etc.

Have to say though, I don't know if this is a red for me personally... Again maybe in this day and age..

Seems like little consideration was given to the fact Sanchez started it and little consideration was given to the 7 nearly bending Moriartys head off at the end (and open hand push to Moriartys face at the very end as well).

Using Moriartys red as a base, I'd say penalty against just Sanchez, yellow or red against Arg 7. Most preferably I'd have liked Penalty against Sanchez, reversed against Moriarty and a warning to Arg 7... Arg still get the same.outcome of a penalty..
