Rynard Landman red carded for elbow to face against Connacht

Newport Gwent Dragon's skipper Rynard Landman is likely to receive a heavy ban after being red carded and cited for elbowing an opponent during his side's 30-25 Guinness Pro12 defeat to Connacht. Landman will face a disciplinary hearing this week.

The hefty South African lock was shown the straight red card for taking out Connacht flyhalf Jack Carty only 15 minutes into the match. Scottish referee Lloyd Linton, after looking at the big screen and chatting with his fellow officials, was left with little choice.

We saw Landman, sometimes referred to as 'Ligtoring' (Lighthouse) on RD two years back when he scored a try, did a great celebration but then was called back as it was disallowed.

Those were happier times (even if it was disallowed!), because now he's facing a significant ban that could be as long as 8 weeks after his foolish misdemeanour. He tweeted the following:

Taking to twitter to express one's remorse appears to be a good way to lessen a sentence these days. Not that this was in any way disingenuous, but every bit helps when it comes to the disciplinary hearing, where he will need to explain his actions and convince the panel that his actions were not only out of character, but he is genuinely remorseful for what he did.

As it was, his moment of madness left his team in the dirt and nobody will know that more than the man himself, as he watched from the sidelines while they manfully took on a talented Connacht side.

A Pro12 statement said that the hearing will take place later this week. For now, you can view the incident near the beginning of the highlights video below.

Hi Oliver, have you set up an account? It might help if you do. Come and join the fun! I've enjoyed your comments, you should be permanent.

I will take your apology into account, plus the fact that you write in superb English and I can only wish that my French was as good. Bravo, mon amis, bravo.

    And RD is whole again.

I don't think it's worth basing a comment on a thread at RD, the holy of holies, on something someone commented on another article on another website.

There is newer thread on RD at the moment where a child from NZ has set up an account called PhillNZ and is having a smashing time before his parents get home. We can ignore these comments and move on.

Well, fool, as I said, it was a comment on l'equipe, so no, I don't think l'equipe would be able to write that kind of bullshit - it was written by a user.

I would hope that most French fans see Dupuy's attack as the most vicious ever, but I definitely don't get that impression from what I see. On the contrary, he's often quoted as being someone who suffered at the hands of an anti-French justice system. And the complete dismissal by what to me seems like the majority of French supporters of Attoub's gouge as being ridiculous and based on nothing more than a possibly fake photo and the fact that he's French makes me think that there are too many conspiracy theorists around.

And I know that comments on any forum can be ridiculous, but the like system gives an idea of what people think of those comments, and when one is overwhelmingly seem as being positive, then it means that it's not just some nutjob writing things that nobody else could agree with and that there is a certain level of consensus, even if among only a certain group of people.

In any case, the desire that players be treated the same regardless of nationality is obviously to be lauded, but in my opinion comments like, "Sometimes you actually get 20 or 50 more weeks for being French!" do more harm to that cause than good. If any time a player (French or not) is banned now it turns into an argument about how French players are treated unfairly, then I'd say that people need to start listening to reason a bit more.

Hm, do u seriously think L'Equipe would be able to write that kind of bullshit? Any serious proof? I just ask because u seem weirdly precise.
Fortunately, Dupuy attack is considered by many french fans and journalists as the most vicious ever. Plus, it annihilated the rest of his career with the french selection.

As for the comments in l'equipe, they are just as ridicule as the youtube or dailymail comments. Fool.

Conspiracy? Certainly not. Let's leave that for Mourinho..
I think french fans just want the same bans whatever the nationality and the image of the player. for example, many 'bitterly' smiled with Cueto eye-gouging, Hartley long criminal case or Atwood stamping on a romanian player.

I saw a comment on an article on l'equipe saying that Dupuy shouldn't have been banned because he clearly didn't gouge Ferris and just rubbed his face with his palm. That comment got about 20 likes and 2 dislikes. When arguably the most obvious case of gouging in rugby history with damning video evidence to support it is simply denied or belittled by the majority (in this case at least) of French people in general, then it's difficult to take the anti-French conspiracy theories seriously.

Anyway, what about Azam getting 9 weeks? That's pretty much the minimum ban for gouging, and he's French, isn't he? Same for Daniel Larrechea getting 6 weeks.

To be fair Dan, he's a second row and a Saffa, he should get a two week reduction for being able to string more than 2 words together..

A couple of days after any thread starts there's usually a few of us who get into some sort of grammar/spelling spat. Can I start it off by saying that Landman should get another week or two for the incorrect use of exclamation marks?

Anyone who punches Duane Vermeulen and isn't eating through a straw for the rest of his life is getting off lightly.

RD, can we get Oliver banned from this website?

    Fair enough.

I think there are certainly calls for French fans to feel aggreived with the disciplinary processes and the subsequent bans. However as you stated, most of the rugby world follows a fairly narrow band of similar mindedness.

Some would say this is worse, others say not as bad.

It is interesting how things often pan out:

French - tend to get worse bans than the rest of the world for comparable incidents.
South Africans - Appear to get lesser bans on a whole.
Kiwis - Well they don't get carded or banned. :p
Pacific islanders - Common place was to get red carded during a game, followed by a very small or no ban.

Then to me it feels like the rest of the world floats around somewhere within those parameters, depending on the location of the moon.

What do you want people to say exactly? Personally I have less words to say about this incident purely because it was so damn ridiculous... At least Pape made an abysmal attempt to make it look accidental - there isn't much of a spin you can put on this incident to make it look any less damning.

My dear French friend, please read between the posts.. I'm sure there were posts asking for Pape to be banned for life etc, we're all aware these are not the majority thoughts.

Also please don't condone what Pape did by stating this was 'just as bad, if not worse' or anything like that.. they're both bad!

Well if you think he is getting off lightly, the Blues lock who punched Duane Vermeulen over the weekend is only getting a week off.

Funny how the victim of his actions does not get mentioned in his so-called apology. Also, he talks about his 'decision' instead of his 'actions'. That sounds like he's pleading guilty to premaditation.

Ah well, 8 weeks seems appropriate to me..

...Why should he get a ban reduction for anything?

I don't know, I was one to sort of defend Hazell by stating 'something' must have happened to provoke that reaction.. (so perhaps I was asking for a sentence reduction..)

But this incident... it was on a player who isn't in the forwards - so not likely to have done something niggly. It wasn't a scrum/ruck/maul etc - again no 'dark arts'. I have no real idea why he did it, a late tackle, a shove or anything, but to elbow a bloke in the face on a rugby pitch right after he kicks the ball (or anytime for that matter), is not likely to have any good outcome.

The ref was only gonna yellow card him until the TMO told him to look at it again.

If I was French then I think I would once again feel aggrieved. Elbow to the head, 8 matches. Knee to the back, 10 matches.

It does seem like you get an extra two to three weeks on the sideline for being French.

Looks like he lost the plot a bit on that one. Especially considering he's the skipper.
