Samu Manoa's huge blindside shot on Leicester's Julian Salvi

Northampton lock Samu Manoa made another bone crunching hit in the Aviva Premiership this past weekend, this time on Julian Salvi. The blindside shot took the flanker by surprise, but anyone who has watched the USA Eagles star over the years will have seen it coming.

he doesn't head up to the TMO... but that look he throws Manoa's way seems to me to be saying... "That was perfectly legal, but JESUS CHRIST!!"

Got to admit I had a moment years ago when I got the nod from the first team after coming out of the colts... had a bit of a disagreement with a flanker through the game then got the perfect shot and levelled him (legally) was so busy taunting the bloke and peacocking about I missed the chance to steal the sodding ball..

...got reminded that we weren't playing rugby league and that rucks are somewhat important..

...needless to say, hasn't happened again.

    Well spotted!

...and well done Luther Burrell, you give Salvi some hard words for that hit that...well...you didn't have anything to do with..

To be totally honest, this is where amateur rugby certainly wins in bucket fulls... chances are if you pulled that shit, someone on the opposition would either clock you or tell you that you had nothing to do with the hit so what are you yelling about, which would no doubt be followed by laughter from everyone in ear shot, opposition and team mates included.

Hahahahaha, to be totally honest Friedrich had me in stitches with his description of props!!

Gets a like from me, looking forward to more of this guy!

That's the hit of the whole fruit... you know when you've been Manoa'd.

One thing I hate is when a player acts like Burrell did after making a big hit, but he didn't even make the hit here. He just saw his teammate to do and then started taunting the player. What a knob.

So what's the deal? Is trolling a Christmas custom where you come from? I mean, you've posted plenty of times on here before but the trolly stuff seems to be new... Hopefully this is just for the festive season.

Anyway, in case you're being serious, I'd interested to know how being smashed in the ribs can lead to head trauma.

That's a bit naughty by Burrell. Pains me to say it as a Saints fan but Salvi definitely showed them how it's done by dusting himself off and walking away with his dignity, despite getting splattered. Always had lots of respect for him as a player.

To be fair to Friedrich, he's pretty much described every front rower I've ever played with.

  • 3:05 AM 24/12/2014

Yeah not on by Burrell but I'd be excited if a teammate did that too. Don't think north was rubbing it in, basically saying it happens to us all. To those that downgraded it because salvi didn't see it coming, show me a video when u time a hit this well...

Btw, friederich, u r a special, special boy

We'll talk again in 10 years when the effects of professional rugby become apparent , just like American Football is having it's athletes with brain problems.

With a tagline of "Make Rugby Softer", you can only be a troll.

Then I guess you're totally oblivious to the vast majority of rugby players suffering from head trauma. This is not to be joked with. Take a look at props. These people are scarred for life: not only are they physically repulsive but mentally they sustained year long IQ-lowering abuse. These people have no other future than checking themselves straight into a retirement home after their professional career. May god have mercy on their demented brains. It's time for World Rugby to step up and take responsibility. Make rugby softer

I'm pretty sure the majority of those "ruggers" will tell you they'd rather keep the physical stuff as a key part of the game.

Hadn't spotted either of them. Yeah, not happy with Burrell here - although, in fairness, it is an excellent Ali impression, isn't it!

By God I hope so! I know English isn't his first language, but it seems his line of comedy is also some kind of high-concept intellectual stuff, that unfortunately doesn't seem to translate too well.

Forgot to mention: thumbs down for Luther Burrell's reaction, trying his best to recreate that Ali-Liston moment.

Would love to hear what George North says to him as he picks him up off the floor. I swear I can see him laughing just after the hit and those pats he gives him on the back of the head are just hard enough for Salvi, pride already dented, to take it the wrong way. Or am I reading too much into it?

it already is more popular than football.
at least to any people with functioning brains.

You see people, these are the sort of thoughts we need to flourish this game into something enjoyable for the whole family. Soon we'll make a think tank where ruggers from all over the world can share their views and opinions on how to make rugby safer, funner and most important of all more popular than football.

I'm reading Friedrich's comments as a satire. No?

  • mozz87

I'd go further than that, all tackling should be banned. From now on, if you want an opponent to surrender the ball you should ask nicely, possibly submit the request in writing. God forbid anyone should leave the field with muddy shorts or bruises. Thoughts?

  • friedrich
    3:10 PM 23/12/2014

If we want to have a clean sport enjoyable for the great public these sort of tackles (assaults actually) must be condemned and banned. I urge those of you that are referees to start doing the right thing and penalize these sort of deviant behaviours.

  • eddie-g
    2:24 PM 23/12/2014

Yep, textbook stuff. Not a difficult tackle to make when the opponent doesn't see you coming, but those are the ones where you want to be trying to cause a turn-over. And he nailed it.

    2:13 PM 23/12/2014

"Ben, stop drooling". I think we all were, weren't we? (Well except for Friedrich up there).

What an absolute beauty of a tackle. OK, the bloke didn't see it coming, but you've still got to get there and make the hit. About as well-executed a tackle as you'll see too - chest height, both arms engaged, drove through him, and forced a knock-on.

Quite impressed how quickly Salvi was back on his feet too!
