Scotland score four tries in impressive win over Italy at Murrayfield

Scotland claimed a record 34-10 Six Nations win over Italy at Murrayfield on Saturday. It was their first win in the championship for two years, bringing Italy crashing back down to earth after their famous win over France just a week ago.

Just a few days back we were singing the praises of Italy, and Luciano Orquera in particular, but as the cliche goes, a week is a long time in rugby. Orquera didn't play to the high standard he set in Rome and was yanked from the field directly after throwing an intercept pass to Stuart Hogg.

Hogg scored from it with an impressive sprint down field, adding to tries from Tim Visser, Matt Scott and Sean Lamont. Italy scored a consolation try through Alessandro Zanni, but Scotland achieved a runaway victory as they took their chances well, pleasing interim coach Scott Johnson. 

"We are really happy with the win as we are now in this championship and want to win it," said Johnson. "I liked the intent from our boys. We spoke about the contact area all week and straight from the start we were aggressive and turned over the ball.

"We had our chances and scored from them. There were areas we showed improvement but there were others where we let ourselves down as we should have put Italy out of the game. There was still plenty left out on the pitch. If we get our part right then we will start killing teams off earlier.

"If we had lost then we were out of the championship. We proved we can score points but sometimes the scoreboard disguised some of our ills," he added.

    Hard to watch as a neutral. After the victory in Rome I was kinda hoping for an Italian win. I think they deserve a strong campaign after all of the weak ones up until now. The sad part about Orquera's intercepted pass is that if he held on to it, he almost surely would have scored between the posts. Imagine the energy that would have injected into the Italian camp.

    But on the other hand it was actually a good entertaining game, at the very least far better than the Wales v France game. I still think Scotland played well and I'm glad they got a win because I'd like to see them do well. They have some talented and spirited players. But like Italy I think their system fails them: why do they only have two professional teams? I think it just limits selections and competition.

    Difficult day for Italy. It was a shame to see them shine against France but to then turn out a tarnished look against Scotland. I think Scotland played very well and did well to capitalise on their opportunities. I believe I made a comment in a previous video about Italy needing a decent 10, and perhaps Orquera was really making that shirt his own, but after that performance I really think the position is open to anyone.

    That attempted clearance hack from the 14 (I think) was definitely head in hands stuff.

    I can;t remember the penalty count, but I seem to recall Scotland still giving away a huge number of them, which is a little disappointing. Especially as they do it against better teams (England) and will no doubt do the same against Wales only to be punished by Halfpenny's boot...

    Nice answer from Scotland even if the score is a bit flattering. their back3 showed their speed and skills, especially on the 2 first tries. Hogg is certainly the scot to watch in the next 10 years

    Italy didn't achieve the same perf vs France, maybe a possible lack of motivation, but i'm still quite impressed by their progress.

    Looking at french poor state of form, both teams will may escape the wooden spoon. there are even rumours in french rugby debacle would help FFR to negociate new deals with top14 clubs in june...
