Sekope Kepu sent off for shoulder charge as Scotland thrash Wallabies

Scotland claimed their largest ever victory over a Tier 1 nation by thumping 14-man Australia 53-24 at BT Murrayfield. The visitors had prop Sekope Kepu sent off late in the first half for a dangerous clear-out of Hamish Watson.

Australia had just scored their - and Tevita Kuridrani's - second try of the match to take a slender 12-10 lead in the game, when the incident happened.

Refeee Pascal Gauzère gave the Waratahs tighthead a straight red card approaching half-time after Kepu charged towards Watson at the ruck.

Watson was uninjured but Gauzère was left with no alternative after consulting Television Match Official Graham Hughes.

Not only was Kepu's challenge late and off the ball, the prop led with his shoulder with force into the jaw of the Scottish flanker.

The game had been finely balanced up till Kepu's sending off and indeed, after the break it was the Wallabies who equalised with Kurtley Beale's try.

But from then on, it was Scotland all the way and Gregor Townsend's side made the most of the man advantage by scoring a further seven tries en route to a record win over Australia, despite losing talisman Stuart Hogg to injury in the warm-up.

Sale winger Byron McGuigan bagged a brace of scores on his first start while Huw Jones made it five tries in as many appearances in the second half.

Not sure I'd use the word conclusive.... Think of it this way, they angles shown for Kepu are showing a guaranteed shoulder to head...

The angles for Vunipola suggest that there may be a case, but they aren't conclusive... So to red card him would be to suggest that the gap in which you can't see has been filled with a speculative decision... I'm surprised it wasn't a red anyway, it was certainly 100% unnecessary, but unlike my earlier post suggesting it should be a red, I can't say I can completely rule out that it wasn't a shoulder to the head.

If a new angle emerges after the game showing the forearm hit Barrett's chest or something like that, then we'd all think any red cards were harsh and wrong, truth be told this is a referee decision that only he can make based on what he sees, we can disagree with each other or with him, but I reckon different nationalities would show different cards..

As for the Healey incident.. not sure on the date looks at least 4-5 yrs ago maybe? and if many players were carded for things like that, but I think I remember watching that and thinking "he'll be off" especially as the referee raises arm for advantage straight after it..

0:24 head contact seems conclusive, though. But it was Poite choice.
Got pretty nothin against mr Vunipola, just joining the debate on consistency.

This incident is, for example, always "funny" to watch: no card, no citing.

    Scotland - Australia: 53-24
    Australia - Japan : 63-30
    Japan - France : 23-23

I wonder how the next France-Scotland will end up...
Last year Les Bleus still had the power to outmuscle the Scots and get a sad an ugly win.
But it seems they 're not even able to be strong and ugly anymore.
    Just ugly.

Sorry, out of the topic, I know. I need to express my despair!

So let's start with Sekope's before turning to Mako. Sekope's is a clear red card, he dives over the ruck, actually a breach of laws 16.3 a,b,c, and d, and collides with Hamish Watson, a breach of law 16.3 f. As he strikes Watson on the jaw with his shoulder he gives Gauzerre no option but to show a Red card.

Looking at the Mako incident, the first is a clumsy charge down, the second also breaches laws 16.3 a,b,c,d, and f. The only mitigation is that it is not clear if he makes contact with Beauden's head. A definite yellow but not clear cut red. However he tucks his right arm in and drives with the shoulder which is also an offence. Taking all into account there are enough offences and concern for player welfare to argue that it should have been red.

The problem is that the laws of the game are being ignored. Diving into rucks to clear players out is dangerous and should be stamped out, however all teams seem to be using this method to clear out players from the ruck area and until the IRB clamps down on these offences players will continue to attempt these dangerous clear-outs

I agree with the lack of consistency being a problem but it's not that easy to achieve. In regards to those two incidents, I actually agree with both decisions. They're both shoulder charges to the head, with elbows tucked in, diving off feet, so at least a yellow for both. But Kepu's hit looks a lot more violent, connecting straight to the head, with a clear intention to do so. Hence the red. Very disappointing from Kepu btw.

As much as I'm against vunipola here, show us the angle where you can see contact with the head? Doesn't matter if you do or don't like him, it's speculative..

Oh yes, good point, you're right, I remember a few of us figured there must have been some contact, but all the camera angles were; as you said, inconclusive..

    Very close call however..

Because Poite choked... That should have been a red.. I remember watching that unfold, first clash with Barrett was penalty/talking to worthy only... But that second hit SHOULD have been a red if we're talking consistency. I can't remember SBW's red now, but I remember thinking the kiwis have the right to be awfully sour after one or the other incident (whichever order they were...)

With this incident, I dunno if I'd go yellow or red... More than a penalty I reckon, but maybe a red is right, (certainly right in this day and age).. I guess like Mako's, nothing was right about this... Arm tucked in, diving off feet, away from the ball, shoulder to head.. nothing about this was in any way salvageable!

What irritates the heck out of fans everywhere is the inconsistency.

For example, why wasn't this a red? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4LB2-rKVKo (at 0:28) Even with multiple replays and the TMO hollering in his ear to take another look, the Ref went for a yellow.

I don't really care whether they are both reds or both yellows - I just want consistency.
