Shane Williams scores in extra time in farewell home game for Ospreys

Shane Williams clearly knows how to do farewells. Not content with scoring with the final touch of the ball in his last ever game for Wales, he did the same again this weekend for the Ospreys, only on this occasion he stepped up and converted it too.

On Friday the fantastic Shane Williams documentary was posted here, a piece by the BBC that charted the life and success of Williams, who is in his final ever season of rugby.

The retiring winger played what could be his last ever home game for Ospreys on Friday night, billed as his farewell match, and he didn't disappoint.

As with his final Wales game against Australia in December, he didn't get much of the ball and the night didn't quite go his way. That is until injury time, as he sealed the Ospreys 31-12 win in style in front of their largest crowd in over a year, 14,468 fans.

With Ospreys safe in the top four of the RaboDirect Pro12, a home semi final spot is all but assured, which means that we actually might be seeing Williams again, for yet another farewell match.

"I'm not injured, which is great, and I'm there in contention for selection. I would never say no. If selected, great," said Williams. "It’s not the end of the line yet even if I'm not selected by the Ospreys because I'm involved with the Barbarians.

"But, if selected, I will certainly give my utmost in all the games," he added.

    In his last international against Australia, it looked to me that Turner conveniently slipped to let Shane glide over the try-line. It is irrelevant if it was a gift, and if it was it's a tribute to a great player.

    Worst possible shorts I have seen a professional team play in... that sponsor on the ass makes it look like either a baboons ass (minus the red) or a bad rip...either that or some "homosexual hole cut in the seat of your shorts" shorts...

    Still technically a high tackle though - would have been a pity to see that decision though.

    It's the only efficient way you can tackle your opponent when he's that close to your try line. If you target the legs like the smallest/lightest players usually do, it's useless at that point.

    Don't know about a spear tackle, but he's definitely high. Would have been amusing to see a penalty for a high tackle on a bloke one whole foot taller than him!

    It initially looked like a soft score to me too but I think the defenders did have to push because of the overlap, the only problem was they both half-pushed and ended up more or less on top of each other! What a legend Williams is, an absolute inspiration in an era of huge backs (from a Munster & Ireland fan).

    Big Leinster/Ireland fan here but I always had loads of time for Shane Williams. Serious player and an inspiration to anyone under 6ft. His style of running and amazing balance were always great to watch. One of my favourite moments of his in recent time was his tackle on Mat Banahan 10yrds from the line causing him to knock on. A guy his size should never have taken him down but his technique was so perfect.

    He will be sorely missed, and you can see just how much he loves the sport, his club and his Nation.

    What a brilliant player! He's one of the best wingers to ever have set foot on a rugby field. Always showing everybody that size does not matter when you put all your heart in it.
    Every rugby fan should be heartbroken this fellow is leaving!

    Re the try: there was a 3 man overlap on the outside and just 2 defenders.....thou i think he should be cited for a self imposed spear myself.....

    seriously thou, I'd recommend for anyone who hasn't to watch that documentary linked to above - we worth it. All round good guy and a great contributor to the game - and not just cos he was better than those 70s Welsh players who never stop goin on about how good they were (!)

    Now THAT is how to dive across the try-line. Even more flamboyant than the one against Australia in his other farewell-to-rugby game.

    Very humble of him to suggest the oppo may have made their own "gentleman's agreement" to let him in at the end, but I have to say it was my first reaction - the Dragons centre may have rolled out a red carpet! Nice try though and what a way to end your career - or are there more fairytale endings to come (finals & baabaas)?
