Police at the Arizona State University have released previously unseen footage of an 'assault' during a college rugby game last February.

A former student at the Arizona State University named as Christopher Crawford, has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and his trial is pending following the sickening incident in a match between ASU and the University of Arizona in February of this year.

In the video, Crawford is seen walking up to opposing player Doug Neary, who at the time is tieing his laces, and proceeds to kick him in the face.

The assault left Neary with numerous injuries which included having six screws and a metal plate inserted into his face along with facial reconstruction surgery.

According to court documents, Crawford said he was 'not sorry' for his actions as he was acting in 'self-defence'. See the disgraceful act below and a news report below that.

Being called a name doesn't give you the right to kick them. Laying on the wrong side of the breakdown however...

If that is true, then neither should be allowed near a rugby pitch again. Violence is not the way to fight prejudice.

It sounds like you were there when it happened and I have no reason to doubt what you say happened, but whatever the motive, that kick to the head was blatant thuggery and to claim otherwise is the "joke".

I am not in any way suggesting a player (or anyone for that matter) should have to accept racist remarks and just "rise above it", but there are other ways to handle this.

Sorry but disagree totally. Huge difference between wanting to settle something 'like men' with your fists and kicking someone in an unprotected position in the head. This is vile and cowardly.

It'd be just another weekend if it happened there.

Too frequent to warrant RD posts...

Imagine if that had happened in France division 3!

Rather than having new standards and background checks, I think giving the aggressor a savage beating in the car park afterwards would be the best way to police this kind of thing. If someone is scum, that's not going to come up on a background check unless they've been caught before.

Bloody hell, can anyone see what caused him to do that? I've tried tracing the player back in the video but can't see anything on camera, maybe it happened as the team in black were chasing up the kick?
