South African captain Siya Kolisi’s participation in this year’s Rugby World Cup has been brought into doubt as scan reveal major knee injury.
Playing for his provincial side the Cell C Sharks, the Springbok skipper was forced from the field within the first ten minutes in their clash with Irish side Munster.
Based on reporting by South African publication IOL Sport, the 31-year-old has suffered an apparent partial tear to his anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) as well as injured his meniscus on both sides of his knee.
The report goes on to say that Kolisi has seen two specialists with one suggesting surgery which could potentially rule him out of the Springboks title defence in France.
It is understood that the 31-year-old backrow will seek a third opinion on Tuesday.
Echoing the sentiments of Springbok fans, Kolisi’s wife Rachel put out a cryptic message on Instagram which said: “Believing for a miracle. Would really appreciate if you would take a minute out your day to pray with us.”
Kolisi has played 75-times for the Springboks and became the first black player to lead the Springboks in a test match against England on June 9th 2018. Remaining captain ever since, Kolisi has been a titanic figure for the reigning World Champions.
