Sonny Bill Williams says he 'let his brothers down' after red card and ban

Sonny Bill Williams has said that he let his brothers down following a red card and subsequent four week suspension after the second Test against the British and Irish Lions. Williams will miss the all important decider this coming weekend, as the series is tied at 1-1.

Williams admitted to an act of Foul Play contrary to Law 10.4(g) Dangerous Charging after he used his shoulder to stop Lions winger Anthony Watson in the first half of the Test in Wellington.

The cross-code star was shown a red card by referee Jerome Garces and the All Blacks played the remainder of the game with 14 men, going on to lose 24-21.

The offence was deemed to have been reckless and warranted a mid-range entry level, which usually means a six week suspension. However, due to factors such as his early admission, disciplinary record, good character and remorse, it was reduced to a four week suspension.

Williams will miss the decider as well as the Blues' final game of the Super Rugby season. He made a short on how he was feeling on Sunday night.

"Obviously really disappointed, but happy with being able to get in there and say my piece," he said after a three hour hearing. "They've come to the conclusion that it was reckless, it wasn't intentional.

"I've got in contact with Anthony and I've apologised to him, but very disappointed that I was sent from the field last night and let my brothers down."

Powerful Highlanders centre Malakai Fekitoa has been called up ahead of the third Test.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen spoke about how Williams was feeling.

"He's disappointed. Not for himself, he accepts he's made a mistake, but he's disappointed because he's let the team down. We can't go back and change it. People make mistakes. It's a fluid game, it's a fast game, it's a physical game so we've got to move on from it."

Do you think that it warranted a red card and suspension, or would a yellow have sufficed?

I'm not suggesting otherwise, but what I'm doing is disputing your take on "forcefully cuddling someone to the floor" in union...

Shoulder is generally the first point of contact, arms as before are an afterthought..you can put a hell of a lot of impact into a hit without having to point your shoulder into someone...I've never had to leave the pitch because of one - that I can remember..but I've felt pretty ropey on occasions... but I have hit one or two that have had to leave.... but what I'm suggesting is that maybe it's more challenging for smaller players to hit hard in union...

...but that point I'll even somewhat dispute due to the little shite 9 who stuck his shoulder into my thigh in a ruck and gave me a dead leg for a week!

It's not just about us little guys, SBW built his career destroying NRL's hardest forwards with shots like that... watch any of his highlights videos on Youtube, the league stuff is bone shattering

I sort of disagree...but then I'm not a 10st10.... I often tend to hit with the shoulder, the arms are just like a guiding cradle at best, at worst they're an after thought that flies round after the shoulder has made the initial impact.. the difference being I don't tuck my arm in to make a hit with the point of my shoulder, which can make for poor technique as you reduce your catchment area...

League without shoulder charges is like Ice Hockey without fighting.

Luckily this is Union, SBW should have known better, and Watson is lucky he didn't get his neck snapped. The kick, chase, and followup tackle were good... why go and throw a shoulder directly after?

Shoulder charges were legal in League until end of 2012/beginning of 2013. In my opinion, it ruined the game. A bloke my size can shatter the ribs of a 2nd row if aiming correctly. Cuddling someone forcefully to the floor requires equal or greater mass to be properly effective. Much like the oldest of old skool Le Mans racers, no seatbelt/arms wrapped often meant you were thrown/bounced to relative safety after impact rather than having 3 people fall on you at the same time

    Don't really understand the polemic.
SBW did a big mistake with this dangerous strike, paid the prize with a deserved straight red and 4 weeks ban, certainly caused the loss of the game for the blacks, destroyed by nz medias & fans, and won't maybe be selected in the future.

    Everyone can do mistake, end.

A bit of all, I guess. Poite, Ayoub and Peyper have an history of a blind eye/folding when it comes to refereering the ABs. Remember https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZdaVL4bcTM ?

Yep, definite elbow to the face off the ruck (21:29).

Terrible tackle. However, while a lot of people are saying the SBW is a dirty player etc. it seems to me like he just make a balls of the situation and rightly paid the price.

What makes me more shocked is that the assistant referees tried to discourage Garces from giving him a red card. The fact that it was red is as clear as day, yet Jaco Peyper tried to talk him down claiming there was little force in it, and even the video ref continuously called him once Garces had made up his mind. I wonder is that due to 1. It was New Zealand 2. It was against a home player 3. The importance of the match and series and having a good spectacle 4. They were genuinely convinced it didn't deserve red.

Correct red card decision by Garces, but you have to ask the question, was this this any worse than the tackles on Henshaw and Zebo? Given the history of the All Blacks playing "close to the edge", it amazes me that this was the 1st red card for an AB since 1967.

As above, read somewhere that SBW was red carded for this IN league (whether true or not)...

I think I've also seen a video on YouTube of a shoulder to the head = red in league... But not 100%

Ref did well not to bottle it considering how badly supported he was by the other officials.

this is one of those that actually looks less bad in slo mo - looks really bad at normal speed for a particular angle.

Whats the League position on this sort of hit btw? I know its slightly different to union, but how would this do in league?

AWJ gives Itoje one hell of an arse smacking shortly after...

Happens around 17 minute mark in the game, or 20 minute mark of video

....it's a terrible source of reference, but I believe I read on youtube somewhere, someone mentioned he had been red carded for this sort of thing in League before... whether or not this is true I've yet to uncover, but on face value, you can say if it gets a red in league then it's probably 100% worth a red in union...

RD - any chance you could post a clip of the scuffle that occurred in the opening 10 minutes of the match. It happened just after itoje went through the line out maul to break up the abs drive. I clearly remember one of the all blacks appearing to elbow awj in the face whilst he lay on the deck (think it was retallick) this caused the scuffle and it wasn't picked up by the tmo or citing commissioner - thanks

The thing that makes this a certain red card is the intent - it seems like SBW is actually looking right at Watson and deliberately goes right in shoulder-first into Watson's head, with Watson's arms tied up in the tackle. Cheap shot and with the current trend of rugby trying to avoid serious head impacts as much as possible it's a guarenteed red, and I'd probably say a red in any other time too.

Fair play on NZ and SBW himself for taking it on the chin, though.
