Springboks beat Samoa to win the Quad Series as Habana reaches milestone

South Africa beat Samoa 56-23 to win the Quad Series in Pretoria on Saturday. It was an action packed game with plenty to talk about, including some unfortunate dirty play, but a positive was the achievement of Bryan Habana, who scored his 50th Test try.

It was a first for a tournament like this, with double headers at each venue. Despite struggling a bit against Scotland, the Springboks went unbeaten, and with so many injuries and a slightly new look team, it was good preparation ahead of the Rugby Championship.

Winger Bryan Habana scored the first try of the game and later crossed for an incredible milestone, as he became just the sixth player to ever reach 50 Test tries.

"This is an achievement all South Africans can be immensely proud of," said proud South African Rugby Union President Oregan Hoskins on Monday.

"Since making his Springbok debut in 2004, Bryan has been an inspiration on and off the field and it is very well-deserved that his name will forever live in the annals of the game as the first Springbok to reach this special milestone and a man who set a mark that will take a very special player to eclipse."

Daisuke Ohata of Japan is the most prolific Test try scorer with 69 five-pointers in 58 Tests. He is followed by David Campese (64 in 101 Tests), Shane Williams (60 in 91 Tests for Wales and the British & Irish Lions), Hirotoki Onozawa of Japan (55 in 80 Tests) and Rory Underwood (50 in 91 Tests for England and the British & Irish Lions).

The Rugby Championship kicks off on Saturday 17th August, with South Africa hosting Argentina.

    That is true, but these young boks are gonna have to come into the 4N or whatever its called and make a massive step up, where as the others are already playing at that level.

    Samoa, Scotland and Italy have rattled Australia recently, but it's probably sensible to look at those results as one offs rather than an indication of the true quality of those sides.

    Him so the fact that the Aussies were beaten by Samoa and nearly so by Italy does not show that these sides were competitive? Yes they were easier opposition but one must remember we have probably one of the youngest teams in years and the experience and time together is what counts and not necessarily the opposition.

    He is the Cheetahs winger, have a look at most of the Cheetahs tries this season and he has either scored them or orchestrated them. He really is a wonderful prospect and although he hasn't been as adventurous playing for the Boks the way he draws players and his timing of the pass has had a massive influence on our backline play.

    I dont think that this tournament will do the Boks any favours coming into the 4N, the other two main sides have had seriously competitive international windows, and the Boks have just piddled around against teams where the result was never in doubt.

    But back to the rugby... Don't think I've seen that South African fullback before - what's his name Billy Le Roux? Looked very handy indeed. As did the centre Engelbrecht. De Villiers still awesome, he must be what 48 now? Seems like he's been around longer than O'Driscoll.

    Don't know if you watched the game but the Springboks were very much in control of the match. Stronger set piece, better out wide and Samoa didn't have an answer for their driving maul. Samoa were starting to lose their composure at around the time of the card due to frustration, so I think for them to have pulled something out of the bag would have been somewhat against the way things were going. Very neat lineout try though...

    Dunno about anyone else but I feel like Samoa could have pulled something out of the bag if they weren't a man down for 30 mins, don't get me wrong I still think they'd have lost but I'd anticipate the margin being a lot less, this is one of the strongest Samoan sides i've ever seen, which is always good to see, holding their own against first rate teams.
