Sunwolves lock Tim Bond has been banned for four weeks following a sending off against the Stormers in Round 7 of Super Rugby on Saturday. Bond tackled Cheslin Kolbe slightly late but more significantly, hit him in the face with his shoulder.

Bond pled guilty to contravening Law 10.4 (e)* Dangerous tackling of an Opponent at Newlands in Cape Town with ten minutes left of their match, that the Stormers won 46-19.

Upon consultation with TMO and assistant referee, Nic Berry showed Bond a straight red card.

Following the disciplinary hearing, SANZAAR Duty Judicial Officer Michael Heron QC stated that Bond explained he was trying to tackle Kolbe with a 'smother tackle', and tried to pull out when he knew the ball was passed.

Heron went on to say that the tackle was high and late and with only one arm engaged. While it was not intentional or pre-meditated, it was reckless as his shoulder connected with Kolbe's head, leading to the Stormers fullback having to leave the field.

"I indicated that I saw this as mid-range, and warranting an entry point of 6 weeks under Appendix 1," stated Heron, also adding that Bond checked on Kolbe and apologised.

"In the circumstances, particularly in light of the early guilty plea, I was willing to discount the relevant sanction to a period of four weeks' suspension, through and including the playing weekend of 7-8 May."

*Law 10.4 (e) Dangerous tackling of an Opponent including early or late and including the action known as the “stiff arm tackle”. Dangerous tackling of an Opponent including a tackle or attempted tackle above the line of the shoulders even if the tackle starts below the line of the shoulders

It wasn't even an assault, it was a hate crime.

7s is rugby in "Safe Mode". I love it. No 60kg and 30cm height differences, no 8 man collapsed mauls, and players are too busy conserving energy to chase and smash you while scoring on a clean break.

Strange that.... Using size to intimidate on the rugby pitch...

Well, lazy as it was, left arm wrapped, so using the "no wrap" argument is bollocks....

He did not wrap up. This should result in a penalty and a verbal warning.

These 4+ week bans for small transgressions are way over the top. To receive a four week ban players should do something truly heinous. I don't mean a high tackle or refusal to wrap. I mean gouging eyes or choking players.

I know that the powers that be are going after foul play with a reformers zeal to make examples but I don't know of any other sport that gives such heavy handed penalties for things that happen in games quite often.

It is very rare to see games of rugby with 30 guys on the field for 80 minutes and this is a problem.

Yellow and red cards have diminished rugby and these citing commissions are way out of hand.

    Shameful tackle. Just shameful.

    4 weeks is lenient.

    Tell that to BOD.

Straight red. I actually hold his size against him. Essentially he's trying to intimidate a smaller player which used to be so admired when I started playing. Get this crap outta the game. 7s has it right, immediate penalties for anything around the neck

Agree. Whilst I think it's right to discourage tip tackles, I can't remember the last time I saw someone injured as a result of one.

Definitely a red card. A further question though; Is this worse than a tip tackle or taking a man out in the air. Offenses which appear to be more heavily sanctioned at the moment

Well he wasn't wrong. That was a horrible tackle, and he had every right to argue the case. Captains do that all the time.

Lazy tackle. He should have got lower and hit him properly. Red card for crap technique.
