Everyone knows how good New Zealand is at harnessing rugby talent. Three times world champions, they certainly know a thing or two about playing. But perhaps the reason why this rugby mad country is so good, is because of the love of the grassroots game.
Last weekend saw some serious skills on show during a match between Te Aute College and Wanganui Collegiate in Hawkes Bay. While the players are nearer their 20s, it must be remembered that they are still at an incredibly tender age in rugby terms.
And with feet like Tristan Flutey for Wanganui and Zach Simpson for Te Aute, who side-stepped his way to create one of the tries of the game, it is certain that a future in the pro game is possible.
Te Aute lost the game 40-27 in a highly entertaining and historic clash, but still honoured their tradition by performing a haka, after laying down their shirts in front of them.
It is a classic example of how rugby can produce quality sport as well as respect and friendship all in one. Both the match highlights and the post-match haka can be see in the video below.
