The Best Tries scored in Round 5 of Super Rugby 2014

It was a massive weekend for rugby as the Six Nations drew to an exciting finale, but domestic rugby also took place around the world, including down south, where Super Rugby's Round 5 produced some fantastic match ups and excellent tries. Here are some of the best. 

A mixed bag this week, including a controversial decision that went the way of the Lions, and brilliant individual efforts from Test stars Beauden Barrett and Israel Folau.

Other tries featured here were scored by Gio Aplon, Phillip van der Walt, and Coenie Van Wyk.

    well Herman, the confusion at this point is whether or not you're being ironic.
    Let's say you're being serious for a sec...
    The ref said it was knocked back by white...as far as I can see that's not what happened.
    As for the "kick", if you lose control of the ball it doesn't matter what it hits after, a kick is a kick, dropping the ball is dropping the ball.
    So at this stage let's just say you were having a laugh....lol good one! ;)

    He is not saying it would be illegal to rip the ball out, he means that if the ball was deliberately ripped out then there would be a case for saying the Blues player knocked it back, rather than the Lions player knocking it on. But because there is no clear ripping action, the onus is on the Lions player to maintain possession in the tackle.

    I must have missed a law change somewhere along the line.
    Since when are you not allowed to rip the ball from the player's possession?
    Always thought dislodging the ball from the player's grasp is a good additional thing to try and achieve in a tackle.

    By the rationale above, it would presumably be penalised?
    I think that would be ridiculous.

    On the SuperXV.com site the full replay of the TMO process clearly shows the ball hitting the ground before the Lions' player's foot hits it, so the "he kicked it" option is not valid. Not that it ever was, in my opinion. It also shows the tackler's arm going across the front of the chest with no ripping action on the ball, and it is clearly not a high tackle. I agree with the SA commentators who are all dismayed by the decision .. and with SANZAR who now say this...
    SANZAR Referees Boss Lyndon Bray: "Lions #13 is carrying the ball and about to attempt to score a try. Blues #11 effects a tackle and Lions #13 loses possession as a result. While the Blues player does jolt the ball out of his possession, he is not trying to deliberately 'rip the ball' out of the player's possession. The onus is on the ball carrier to maintain possession while being tackled. Therefore, this should have been ruled as a knock on and subsequently, no try."

    I can't really see it properly but that last lions try, for those of you saying it that off his foot as he dropped it.. He still dropped it as I think the ruling is you have to have control over the ball before dropping it to the foot so should have been knock on. Or penalty try whichever you prefer... But also pretty boring video considering all the tries scored over the weekend

    Yes he dropped the ball, but onto his boot, technically he kicked it forward. As his supporting players were behind him, they were onside to touch it down and the try was legal. Where's the confusion.

    On the Lions try, I think that the TMO got it right. Granted, we don't have very good replays to judge from compared to what the TMO worked with, but it looked to me like the ball actually came off the Lions' player's foot and was subsequently grounded by another Lions player. Weird but definitely a try.

    Oh, and I would have given a penalty try for the high tackle alone, so they got it right either way.

    Conrad Smith slipped off the tackle on Le Roux which he won't be happy with but scored a try on his 100th Super rugby game I think it was ?

    Benji Marshall scored a great try in that Lions game, no idea how it isn't one of the top 5.

    The TMO decision was ridiculous. The ball wasn't grounded properly, the only question after that was whether the it was a high tackle in which it should have been a penalty try. But it wasn't that either, so all in all, an epic screw up, and possibly very costly for the Blues.

    That decision to give the try in the lions vs blues match is quite frankly appauling. How can someone be put in the position of TMO if they do not have a very good understanding of the laws of rugby.
    Missing forward passes, or judging a tackle wrongly is a forgivable mistake by refs or TMOs but something as clear and obvious as that is just stupid.
