The Chiefs score six tries to thump Wales in midweek match

Wales were handed a 40-7 thumping earlier today, leading to questions over the merit of such a fixture in the middle of a very tough three-Test series against the world champions. The Chiefs weren't full strength on paper, but there was a top performance by Stephen Donald.

The Chiefs got out to a 21-0 lead at one stage as a second string Wales, who had Sam Warburton starting for them, couldn't contend with the former Super Rugby champions, who themselves were missing eight players to the All Blacks, some U20 players and had up to ten players out with injury.

"It was a pretty special performance," said coach Dave Rennie. "I think our leadership group, led by Beaver (Donald), did a really good job of creating a hell of a lot of excitement.

"There was an opportunity to get an international scalp and we knew it was going to be watched by massive numbers around the world. So we're just really proud."

The Chiefs, who scored six tries to one, were captained by Donald in his 88th match for them. In terms fo stats, it was only the third time that a Super Rugby team has played a touring international team.

So the fixture was something new, which obviously called for a change in tradition and for the first time in their 20-year history, the Chiefs performed a prematch Haka. We've seen it when they've won the Super Rugby competition in 2012 and 2013, but never prematch before.

Donald left the field to a standing ovation after 70 minutes,  saying that he just couldn't stay out there. "It’s been about two years since I had to play 80 minutes and my little calves couldn’t get me the distance.

"We seemed to defend for 80 per cent of the game but this group of battlers did well tonight. We were excited as hell about this match. The Welsh are a good team and we thought, ‘Hell, we’re just going to rip into them,’ and hopefully that will be enough."

Match highlights below, then the first ever Chiefs prematch Haka below that

1:23 is the highlight for me. Lock sidestepping an outside centre is a sight to behold. I wonder what the other *four* Wales tacklers were playing at but there was some very deceptive stepping all the way to the line from the big man.

Yesterday I was reading about what a valuable hit-out the Chiefs match would be, and a chance for players knocking on the door of test selection to make their claims for Wellington. To quote Mr Gatland, "it's a huge opportunity for these players, they have trained hard and are ready to get game time under their belts". Planet Rugby predicted Wales to get home by more than 10 in a "morale-boosting win".
Today I've been reading about what a waste of time mid-week matches are and an unfair burden on these highly paid professional athletes. What a difference a day makes.

At least your team did not lose against 14 men

    Embarrassing.
Scary thing is Gatland is probably favourite to coach the lions. WRU needs to bite the bullet and call time on him. He's done great things for us but he's simply not developed Wales further since 2013. Now he's ruining a generation of talented young Welsh players with his predictable tactics and poor selection policies.

I guess it gives coaches a change to give some new or less experienced players a run out to see how they do. They serve less purpose on a Lions tour though.

Agreed. I don't know much about this game and I'm also not a Welsh supporter, but I'd chalk this down as an embarrassing loss for the Welsh jersey...

Where's the value in these midweek games? Win with a scratch team and you've done what was expected, lose and you're an embarrassment. It's not a supportive environment in which to bring through players, nor is it a great rugby spectacle because the team is unbalanced and is just trying to make it through to the weekend unscathed.

I know it's all great fun for the home nation's regional teams, but the unions need to learn to stop flogging their players and brand.

Reminds me of Lions in 2013 when Shane Williams was parachuted in for a pointless fixture. I'd rather watch u20 champ games than this.
