The Dimitri Yachvili stamp on Racing Metro's Henry Chavancy

Last week Biarritz scrumhalf Dimitri Yachvili was cited for repeatedly stamping late in the Top 14 game against Racing Metro, last Saturday. Due to the delay in the disciplinary procedures in France, Yachvili is actually free to play until his hearing.

Yachvili was sin-binned for his multiple stamps on Henry Chavancy's legs as the Racing Metro player found himself trapped in the bottom of a ruck, apparently preventing the ball from emerging.

The incident occured as Biarritz were hot on attack, attempting to narrow the gap in the Parc des Sports Aguilera fixture, which ended with Racing winning 23-11. 

Yachvilli, a veteran of 61 Tests, was cited but he will only face his hearing come March 13, which means he is free to play until then. As a result, he played in Friday night's Basque derby against Bayonne, where he kicked two penalties as the sides drew 6-6.

Ireland prop Cian Healy was banned recently for a similar incident, although he appealed and on a technicality, had the suspension reduced by a week.

His hearing was five days after the incident, whereas Yachvili will only appear before the discplinary committee almost three weeks after trampling on Chavancy.

There's plenty of time to discuss this one before we find out what kind of suspension he receives.

    Absolutely fine and totally acceptable, if I was lying all over the ball however.

    If I was out of the way of the immediate action and you stuck a boot on me, I'd have your number marked (hopefully) and look forward to dishing out some revenge.

    There's raking, then there's stamping right on the ankle joint. Absolutely disgraceful. His reaction to the confrontation was a terrible too. He needs to be heavily sanctioned for this.

    That's just bad refereeing, he should have been ready to blow a penalty for holding on, there was obvious holding on, the ball was slow out so no advantage... Next there's stamping which he seems to be completely aloof... and finally he looks on as the guys spark up... if he would have done his job he would have protected the player which forced the turn-over in a perfectly legal way from going out injured... I hope the ref gets as much of a ban as Yachvilli...

    Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately news is news and as such we can't ignore these type of things as many would like to see the big talking points, good or bad.

    We are concious of trying to maintain a certain level of positivity though, so the less dirty incidents there are, the easier it'll be.

    Bollocks....
    Charvancy arrives correctly gets hands on ball legitimately, so it's now turned into a Maul.
    The Maul collapses, and Charvancy is entitled to prevent the ball being available to secure a turnover for his team ......Ball is off the ground so it never becomes a ruck.

    Therefore even proper foot use! wasn't appropriate let alone these cheap shots.
    Therefore it should have been RED

    THE CITERS have a duty to cut out this shameful & historically believed no9 'right to Stamp !

    Disappointing from Yachvili.
    When players that I like do things like that I feel "betrayed".
    It was the same feeling with Rougerie eye gouge.
    Why those disciplined professional players come to that? I guess there must be reasons. There are bad guys playing rugby (mainly in England he he he, just kidding). But Yachvili doesn't seem to be a mere brute.
    Maybe it s consistent with their personality. When you have really high expectations, it can be hard to stand a pirate trying to slow down the ball.
    I played rugby couple of years, almost never got a ban, or even a penalty against me. But then there was this game, where I had the feeling that every opponent was cheating in every possible way and the ref was asleep...
    Still, trying to understand doesn't mean it doesn't deserve a sanction.

    Dear RugbyDump Admins:

    I hate that all these instances of foul play get so much attention on this great site.
    To put it in context, 3 whole weeks of the Top 14s best tries got the same amount of attention.
    I come here to see great rugby plays, not reasons to dislike the sport.

    Never liked him, arrogant, overrated. If he slows the ball down then you will get a penalty. Stamping is just a cheap shot really

    That is pure filth, plain and simple.
    And please, let's stop all this "Chavancy knew what he was doing" rubbish. Whether he did or not when did it become the opposing player's right or duty to dish out the punishments?
    I may be wrong but I was always led to believe that was the job of the referee!!
    The guy was trapped at the bottom anyway, how the hell was he supposed to get out of there?
    Typical cheap shot from Yachvilli, I hope they throw the book at him page by page because I hate this sort pure nastiness in our game.

    Oh my God. That's ten times worse than Healy's recent stamp. At least Healy had the (unacceptable) justification that Cole was purposefully blocking the ball with his leg in the air, but here the guy's leg is just on the ground under a pile of bodies. I can't believe that he just kept stamping and stamping for no reason. It's really terrible. And his 'push' into the face of the Racing player afterwards wasn't very nice either.

    I'm trying to brace myself for all the conspiracy comments about how French players are unfairly treated when Yachvili gets 10 weeks.

    I'm not sure Chavancy did anything wrong. Once the initial tackle was made he came through the gate, stayed on his feet and got his hands on the ball before the ruck was formed. The tackled player was holding on, then the ruck formed and quickly turned into a pile of bodies. There was no way that Chavancy could have gotten out, and in fact Biarritz should have been penalized for not releasing the ball.

    After all that, Yachvili comes in and does his best Fred Astaire impression on Chavancy's leg which wasn't really preventing the ball from coming out. Foul play indeed! Yachvili should know better, and he deserves to sit for a long time.

    There's nothing new to see a 9 using his foot to "move away" offside defenders, but here, yachvili went too far. he will receive the ban he deserves.

    On Healy's case, i heard the irfu appealed the decision because of technical issues. whatever, the morale is that healy was condemned for 3 weeks and has finally missed just 1 international rugby match.

    it revives the debate to may change weeks bans in match bans

    There is no provision in the law book to allow scrumhalves to use their boot in that manner. It was bordering on serious foul play. Regardless of the actions of Chavancy, Yachvilli should have let the ref deal with the ball being illegally slowed down instead of taking the law into his own hands

    I agree Chavancy was at fault but I think Yachvili went a wee bit too far with the stamping ....as for the delay in the Citing hearing that seems to suit France for the rest of whats left of the Six Nations given their apparent problems at 10

    Definitely looked worse than Healy's stamp. In my humble opinion off course. The citing proces is quite laughable in this case. Three weeks before the hearing takes place. Really? Why? Is everybody on strike?
