#Throwback Thursday: Transvaal dominate with great tries in 1993

Ahead of this coming weekend's Super Rugby final, here is a quick look back at when the Lions (then Transvaal) were in their heyday. They won the inaugural Super 10 title in 1993, and in the same year, won the Currie Cup, playing some stunning rugby along the way.

They beat Auckland in the final of the Super 10 that year, and won the Currie Cup in 1994 too.

The likes of Francois Pienaar, Pieter Hendricks, Kobus Wiese and a number of 1995 RWC Springboks all featured in that team. Also look out for hooker, Dr Uli Schmidt, on the wing.

Yep, feels like they could make one of those brink-of-disaster-and-back sports movies about it.

Fun times. It's amazing to see the Lions doing so well again. Surreal after what they've been through over the years!

Old school mate of mine, Jaco Louw, makes the break down the touchline in that first try. Almost forgot he was part of the Transvaal setup in those years. This was such a good era for Transvaal/Lions. Their pack was brutal, and a guy like Hennie le Roux at 10 really thrived off the forward dominance. This era was also when the captaincy was handed over from one Ellis Park legend, Jannie Breedt, to another, Francois Pienaar.
