Throwback to the most awkward interview of all time

Will Genia is known for many things, particularly being one of the best scrum halves to have played the game. He won 110 caps for Australia in a 10-year international career, as well as dominating the Super Rugby competition for the Reds between 2007 and 2019, with a brief hiatus to test himself over in France with Stade Francais from 2015-2017.

What some may remember is a hugely comical interview he did in 2012 with Rod Kefer after damaging his knee playing for Australia. Genia twisted his knee when collecting a high ball in the 68th minute, leading to his removal from the field.

When questioning Genia about the match, the reporter referenced the eventual win for the Wallabies, alongside Genia's unfortunate knee injury. "For you personally not a great night, but a great night for the team".

Somewhat more unfortunately for Kefer, the question was deemed by Genia not to be about his knee but about his individual performance instead, leading to a very uncomfortable response.

Genia responded: "For me personally, you having a crack at me there? Mate it's not about any individuals it's about the group mate. So very happy with the performance, but I was happy with my contribution".

This led to Kefer having to quickly jump in and clarify "I was on about the knee mate, the knee".

Fortunately, the missed communication was quickly resolved with Genia realising the mistake and apologising at the end of the interview.

Following his retirement from international rugby in 2019, Genia went on to play rugby over in Japan for the Kintetsu Liners.
