Two fans banned following investigation into homophobic abuse of referee

Two people have received a ban and fines from attending Twickenham following an investigation from the RFU into recent homophobic abuse directed at referee Nigel Owens. Owens said recently that he feels homophobia could be creeping into rugby.

The allegations were made by a fan attending the recent England vs New Zealand match at Twickenham. He said that he heard some awful abuse being hurled in the direction of the openly gay Welsh referee. He reported it a few days later, which led to the investigation by the RFU.

There is a second investigation still ongoing, but two people have been banned for two years from attending Twickenham, as well as fined £1000 each, that will go to a charity of Owens' choice.

“While instances of this nature are exceptionally rare, the RFU takes rugby’s values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship very seriously, and is determined to uphold the," said RFU CEO Ian Ritchie.

"We are all guardians of these aspects of the game, on and off the pitch, and it is these values which make the sport special.”

The RFU will continue to underline what is expected of supporters. At international matches the RFU will put messaging in the programme, in every ticket pack, on mid-tier LED boards and big screens throughout match day.

This season a new confidential text service (Text HELP to 60886) is available to report any anti-social or discriminatory behaviour at the stadium. There are 850 stewards on hand to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all fans.

Owens spoke to BBC Sport recently and said that the issue is worrying, and it's unacceptable that this type of abuse is quite possibly creeping into the game. He also said that he feels a responsibility to speak out against homophobia in rugby.

I probably wasn't clear enough in my original post. What I meant was if there is an incident like this, and the guilty parties got their tix through a club, I would not automatically ban that club from future allocations as a result of one incident. If there was a repeat incident with the same club, totally different matter.

Very happy however for the RFU to put all clubs on notice, I think just the news that the RFU is getting tough on this stuff - and the risk of shaming a club associated with bigoted idiots - should be enough to incentivise clubs to police their own.

Got to admit, I cried with laughter when I read about the twitter thing with the rugby players and Nigel Owens:

"Evans wrote: "Legs and ass are in bits, can't move." Thomas posted in reply: "U gotta stop hanging round with Nigel Owens!".

Evans then made an apology of sorts on behalf of Thomas: "For those ppl [people] who got the wrong end of the stick... it was from our savage training day yesterday, sorry about my friend fellow ppl.""

I don't know actually, I sort of agree with Dan with the club suspension thing. These incidents aren't going to be too common, think of the thousands of people at a match, and the hundreds (thousands?) of clubs they break down into, the chances of getting two incidents from the same clubs is very slim, so an instant quash is probably needed, otherwise the next time it happens it'll be 10 years or so away and you can hardly imagine they'd view that as a pattern..

I do wholeheartedly agree about self policing, as long as everyone is on board with the joke then it's fine, as soon as someone is becoming alienated in a way that THEY view hurtful things are less than fine. We have black guys on our team and naturally there are borderline jokes that fly round, it's all in good nature and works in both directions, if someone were to feel aggrieved then I believe it's important to take a stance on it quickly.

We see it in soccer where fans will blindly support an arsehole player who is clearly in the wrong, JUST because he is their player!!! I'm s**t at football, I have no interest in it, but I do recall racial incidents where it's not hard to read lips yet fans were blindly defending the players, we should be working as a community.

The club is bigger than the player, but the game is bigger than the club, and we're all part of the game!!

Ok, then a written warning to the clubs. We should be harnessing our pretty powerful sense of honour and loyalty within clubs to tackle this issue.

Don't agree on the club suspension, not over a single incident. If any sort of pattern develops, for example Twickers has to ban multiple supporters from the same club, then there's a case to hold Bellend RFC to account.

    Well done to the RFU.

The day rugby is no longer a sport where fans of all types can go and enjoy the experience, it will lose one of its biggest selling points. I think there's been a general sense that Twickenham needed to take the lead in dealing with these idiots, but hopefully all grounds will follow their example should the need arise.

As for Owens, been pure class the way he has dealt with this whole situation.

I don't think they should be banned for life. People should have the potential to learn from their mistakes as long as they don't present a threat to others.

These two clowns might have got tickets through Ticketmaster or whatever, but if hypothetically they got through through a rugby club, I think their club should have their ticket allocation suspended for a year. We, as citizens and supporters, should be policing each other. This would be a good way of doing that. Nobody will be laughing at training when they know they're going to miss out on the chance of tickets due to some knobhead from the club.

Name the club/organisation they're with in the programme. If they got tickets through work, make sure the company is named in the next programme.

Should have banned them for life. Our fine game cannot and will not descend into the same mess as football. In our game we respect the referee whether as player or spectator and welcome people of all creeds colors and sexuality as it makes not one jot of difference.
