UCT Ikeys win 2014 Varsity Cup final with unbelievable comeback

On Monday night South Africa's Varsity Cup Final produced one of the most thrilling late comebacks ever seen as UCT Ikeys (University of Cape Town) scored three tries in five minutes to beat Pukke (North-West University ) 39-33 after trailing 33-15.

Potchefstroom played host to a historic Varsity Cup Final as the home fans witnessed an incredible comeback from visiting UCT, who scored a dramatic late try after a missed dropgoal.

Varsity Cup has traditionally been used to experiment with the laws of the game, and as you'll note in the footage, there are a few unique elements on show. For example, there are two referees. The points scoring is also slightly different - 3 points for a conversion, 2 points for a penalty/drop goal.

The latter is there to encourage running rugby, with a converted try being worth 8 rather than 7.

The pink shorts that you may notice are there to indicate the best player from the previous match. The colour is part of Varsity Cup's drive to raise awareness for domestic abuse.

Pukke looked comfortable with five minutes left but Ikeys fought back, leading to a home mistake with time up, and a snatched try by Nathan Nel after some excellent play up the left wing.

"We are a family and we knew that we would have to dig deep to get the victory," said skipper Liam Slatem. The character of this team is indescribable and that was evident last night. It is a very special team and I've said it since we began this road."

Supersport's coverage takes us through the final seven minutes in full, with commentators Owen Nkumane and Warren Brosnihan calling the final moments as the stunned home crowd watched on.

You can also watch a shorter highlights package with all other tries on page two of this post.

On a side note, there was an unfortunate incident post match, where some players from the two sides got in a fight in a fast food restaurant, and a female fan joined in and was hit in the face. You can view the CCTV footage and read more details about the story by jumping to page three.

Above you can see footage of the aforementioned incident that has implicated a number of players, specifically one from UCT who can be seen striking a 21-year-old female student. Shortly before that, she can be seen continuously striking the player on the head with what appears to be a shoe.

She has said that she suffered from concussion and needed five stitches in the face.

"I continued to help my fellow Puk member and then the UCT player gave me a right hook in the face," she has been quoted as saying.

"He tried to hit me again but someone stopped him. We have video proof and witnesses. The video clearly shows the attack on me and the (Pukke) player Edmar Marais.

There have been allegations of pepper spray being used, which explains some of the reactions near the end of the video. The entire incident is being investigated by the Ikeys Rugby Club.

"We take the allegations seriously and will fully co-operate with an investigation. While the processes are under way the player accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence, but if the accusation is proven we will take appropriate action," they said in a statement.

I disagree. Touch judges are already advising refs from the lines. T

As though points inflation isn't already enough. And two refs? American football has too many. Aren't the touch judges (oh, excuse me, assistant refs) already advising refs?
If anything, the conversion should be changed to one point if placed kicked, two for a drop kick. Regarding kicking, it's supposed to be part of the game. It seems backs don't know how to grubber or dribble a ball anymore, which is a great way to counter flat defensive backlines coming up fast in defense. The kick into touch rules were changed a long time ago. Tactics changed with that. Now it seems every year there's changes in the laws. As a ref it is maddening to have to keep up with it, and it can't be a piece of cake for the players either. Overhauling the game's rules are being done way, way too much!

Yikes, that was a big punch, she stayed standing though..

I'd never condone hitting a women, I know some people have mentioned he was pepper sprayed or something, if that's true then I suppose there is some excuse.

Although I think women on a whole should be careful, I mean she was certainly not just trying to split it up...

From the games I've watched I have liked how the 2 refs have worked but I obviously haven't watched all the games (I'm a UCT student). There seems to be much less of an error rate in referee decisions.

as for the woman -- she clearly exercised gratuitous use of the boot to the head/neck area -- 4 week ban normally..

but because she's South African, will probably get 6 -12months... or just a punch to the yapper.

With regards to the clock: A saw a number of times when the ref called time off but the clock on the TV carried on.

Thanks for your reply. I guess if he'd been blinded by pepper spray then I can understand. I still have no idea what the hell she thought she was doing there. I know that it's not really on for a big guy to hit a woman, but likewise it's not on for a woman to hit a guy, whatever his size. She was just asking for trouble.

Overall, that particular punch aside, a pretty shameful end to a cracking game of rugby.

Depends what varsity. Most are good except perhaps Stellenbosch when they are losing. That can turn nasty, I watched them play in the final at home last year when they lost to Tuks (University of Pretoria) and all manner of things were thrown on the field. A few too many drunk students.

On the whole though Varsity rugby is pretty good with regards to crowd behavior etc.

thumbs down to myself for not reading the description above by RD staff.

I like the 2nd referee - especially to manage set piece and other-side of a breakdown... How has it been received in ZA?

does the Varsity Cup play any slightly different rules? I kept hearing the commentators droning that a Penalty kick was only 2 points?

Also, was there an issue with the clock? Seemed that the final scrum was awarded at a time (on the TV clock at least) where many a ref would have just whistled No Side.

Amazing effort. Goes to show just how deep the talent drawer is in places like ZA -- guys who we've never heard of (and may never hear from again) doing amazing stuff with the prolate spheroid..

Wow. The commentators were talking about the best comeback of 2014, but I'd say it shouldn't be limited to 2014 alone.

Did anyone else notice at 82.15 that a missile seems to have been thrown at the ball-carrier? Is that normal is SA university rugby?

He released an official statement saying that he had been pepper sprayed just prior and couldn't see who was attacking him. Her statement was absolutely ridiculous claiming self-defense and that she was just trying to stop the brawl. Nobody should hit anyone over the back of the head 15 times with a shoe and expect a clean getaway.

If you'd like a link to the story and both his and her statements I can find it quickly. As a general rule of thumb, I feel people should avoid wading into mass brawl and beating people over the head. Damn shame it came to all that.

Equality works both ways ladies. Those heels hurt when you're being smacked on the head up to ten times.

The rugby is great, but just on the pink shorts, which are in part a publicity effort to tackle domestic abuse in SA (which is sadly way too prevalent)... maybe the, erm, combatants in the punch-up afterwards can be made to wear pink dunce-hats.

I was also going to ask why this incident happened at, of all places, a fast-food joint. But them I remembered this is Potch, and probably this was the only place for people to go after the match to get a burger and a milkshake.

What's with one player from each side wearing pink shorts?

Fighting during a game is one thing, fighting after is messed up. I don't know what that young woman thought was going to happen. Everyone has a right to defend themselves.

You never ever ever hit a woman. But for her to characterize that as an attack on her is absurd.

So she thought that by whacking some lad over the head repeatedly with her shoe she was going to get his phone number? Sorry but she is as much a thug ( thugette) as the rest and dererves what she gets.

I saw the highlights earlier on when a friend shared them on facebook, and what a game, but...

Commenting only about the assault in the final video:

Fucking hell. What the hell was she doing wading into the middle of that? The bloke properly clocked her in the face, and surely he knew who he was punching. Clearly she could only have been an irritation and didn't deserve that sort of response. Hope the guy ends up with some sort of punishment as a result.

Disgusting episode. For me it tarnishes the whole collection.

Regardless of who got punched, a public fight following a game is pretty low. This should be the time for mutual respect and a few beers, not this sort of bollocks.
