Wallabies crush the Barbarians in Matfield's farewell game

The Barbarians disappointed a Twickenham crowd of 51 212 as they went down 60-11 to a far more organised and determined Wallaby team. It was also a farewell for Victor Matfield, who captained the Barbarians in his final game, but had no joy on the day.

The game itself was fairly disappointing for the neutral as an invitational side packed with talent simply couldn't withold the powerful Wallabies, who themselves bounced back well following a Rugby World Cup campaign that hadn't gone the way they'd planned.

Missing Quade Cooper due to injury, James O'Connor slotted into the number ten channel and proved to be a more than capable replacement, giving the Australians plenty to work with in future.

While the Wallabies face Wales next week as part of their mini-tour, the day was also meant to be about one of the great servants to Springbok rugby, lock Victor Matfield, but he was left making tackles all day. Perhaps the festive catching up during the week was to blame for such a weak all round performance.

"It was a fantastic week and, even though we lost the game by so many points, I will remember it for a long time. When you come up for the Barbarians you don't have a lot of training, so some days you click, other days you struggle a bit," he said.

"Maybe the communication wasn't there, there were one or two slipped tackles and then the other side get momentum and it's hard to stop. Australia are a full international side and they know each other pretty well.

"The Barbarians have two out of three now in the last three years against the southern hemisphere teams so why shoot them down after one bad game? I think it's a fantastic idea and we need this in rugby," added Matfield, who will now take on a coaching role within the Bulls setup.

Below are highlights from the game, and we'll have one or two other clips from it during the week.

I was very confused by that, why was he allowed to run up to the conversion? Surely O'Connor hasn't moved towards the ball yet? I mean he does the same movement every kick and none of the others were charged down...

Could anyone on the field defend? I'm no Cipriani fan but I'm surely missing the great ability of others on the field. There was maybe 3 players who did themselves well. The rest looked like amateurs.

Damn, right, Ehtch. Cipriani only likes to play behind a dominating pack. And after all his so called "defensive coaching" during the off season, he STILL can't tackle to save his life

Well, he's 80kg ringing wet. Defensively very poor throughout, but Burger was none too better in that try. It's a good job they played him on the wing to protect him too. I also think being outside Freuan probably flattered him.

Over all the performance from everyone involved was poor. Poor attack, poor defence. Even poor commentary and refereeing in the way of imaginary forward passes being pinged.

Just posted this on that great vid link mise, and some of you might agree. I quote, meeself,
"Watching James O'Connor taking a conversion/penalty is like watching paint dry/a slug goiing from? A to B. And there's me thinking that Stringer was a bit of a c*nt. Well done yews baldy leprechaun."

Cipriani started to flap when the baa-baas were losing by thirty points, and wished he wasn't there. He is a sun shines player.

Here is the Stringer clip. Brilliant! showed the young lad a thing eh?
always clever - he so should be playing somewhere at the mo! 3rd choice in Munster based it seems on age not talent. Will surely be snapped up soon?

Ioane ran straight through Tomkins. Disappointed in that tackling by him.

Not meaning to take away from a good win by Australia but...

...my goodness, what crappy defense by the Barbarians. Really, I saw better tackling in my son's under 12 games last weekend.

Well, it makes entertaining highlights anyway. Would have been better if half the tries were scored by the other team.
