Wallabies top 'Pool of death' after resolute defence sees off Wales at Twickenham

The Wallabies continued their dominance over Wales with a courageous 15-6 victory, despite being down to 13 men for almost ten minutes of the second half. Wales put a huge amount of pressure on the two times champions, but their defence stood strong.

As a result Australia have claimed top spot in Pool A, meaning they will face Scotland in the quarter final, while Wales face a quarter final encounter with South Africa.

Injuries continue to be a concern for the Welsh, with Liam Williams the latest casualty. He is out of the rest of the World Cup with a foot injury. James Hook is likely to move to the midfield for the quarter final, with George North moving back to the wing.

After a phenomenal effort, Wallabies skipper Stephen Moore spoke of the heroics on defence.

    I think Campese said the same sort of thing. I think he firstly praised Australia (naturally), but then secondly hit out at the Welsh for being so unimaginative.. Wales had a 2 man advantage, yet still chose route 1 against a team with one of the best flankers in the world...

    Rugby brought down to its most basic form. You cannot score without the ball. Slow ball is dead ball.

    Blind side and Open side are irrelevant in the modern game. A flanker's job is to get their hands on the ball. If they can run through brick walls while doing it, even better. But first and foremost, they need to know their way round the shady corners of a breakdown. Get the 8 on board too, take 1/3rd of the field each, and go snaffling.

    Even without Hooper, the Australian back row are a different kind of animal. It doesn't matter where you are on the food chain, they will eat you alive. Very intelligent play, especially after all the mid-week headlines about lack of brains in the squad. A masterclass in knowing when to compete and when to allow possession.

    I would advise some rugby trainers to make a 10 minutes montage when Australia played with Genia and Mumm in the sin-bin.
    The defence strategy during these minutes has to be shown in rugby schools.

    Super game. Stalingrad-like defence from Australia. I thought it was all over for them after the second yellow card. Seeing them manage a 2-man handicap for nearly ten minutes when camped on their try line was outstanding.
