WATCH: Argentina make major history at Vancouver 7s

Argentina made history with their display at last weekend’s Vancouver 7s.

The 7s World Series returned last weekend after an almost 3 month break following the Spain legs of Malaga and Seville. Singapore was the destination for the return as Fiji rediscovered their regular top form taking the title. Fiji were bolstered by the return of now player/coach and 7s legend Jerry Tuwai to their squad. Singapore saw the introduction of New Zealand and Samoa back on the series, having not featured this season in the Spain legs or Dubai. It has been over 2 years since those two nations competed on the World Series.

However, it had been 14 years since Argentina last claimed a title on the Series, and they broke that duke yesterday, winning the Vancouver 7s. Vancouver was the event which followed the weekend directly after the Singapore 7s.

Throughout the entire weekend, Argentina showed more than just glimpses of what they are capable of. They started off the weekend with a draw against France, but finished the pool stages on Saturday strongly with wins against Scotland and Ireland. They saw off Scotland with a comfortable 24-5 win and beat Ireland 26-19.

They eased their way into the semi finals with a 40-17 win over England and beat Australia 24-12 to book a final spot against the Singapore champions, Fiji. Even though Fiji started the game off with the first score, the pace and flair of Argentina was too much for the islanders. Argentina well and truly punished Fiji for their mistakes. Argentina were marshalled by 2021 World 7s Player of the Year, Marcos Moneta and talisman Felipe Del Mestre who bagged the final two tries for Argentina to seal the win.
