35 year old, former Australian prop Sekope Kepu has been announced as the inaugural captain of new Super Rugby side, Moana Pasifika.
Kepu earned 110 caps for the Wallabies in his 11 year international career from 2008 until his last cap in 2019. Kepu became the first Prop for Australia to reach 100 caps and became only the ninth player to become a Wallaby centurion.
In an emotional video, head coach and former all black Aaron Mauger announced Sekope Kepu as the first captain of the franchise. Kepu was announced as the captain in front of the entire playing squad and management. The video captures the moment Kepu found out he will lead the club for the coming season. The video encapsulates Kepu overwhelmed with emotion and met with a rapturous applause as he accepts a commemorative oar from Mauger.
In his acceptance speech, Kepu mentions “this is our village, these are the people we defend for”. Certainly, this was undoubtedly an incredibly proud moment for Kepu and for the staff, players and supporters of Moana Pasifika.
Moana Pasifika will join the newly rebranded version of Super Rugby, Super Rugby Pacific.They are one of the two new sides to join the competition, alongside the Fijian Drua.
