England winger Joe Cokanasiga produced a Jonah Lomu-inspired try against Canada during Saturday’s Test match at Twickenham.
The 23-year-old got the ball on the right wing and used his 112kg frame to steamroll over the top of Canada fly half Peter Nelson en-route to the try line.
The way Cokanasiga ran over the top of Nelson has already been compared to the way the late great Lomu dismissed England’s Mike Catt during the 1995 World Cup.
The Bath winger stands at 6ft 4” and was included in the 2019 World Cup squad in Japan and he scored a brace of tries at Twickenham against the Canadians to help England to a 70-14 win.
Prior to receiving his first Test cap in 22 months last weekend, Cokanasiga told BT Sport: “I think I’ve worked really hard, just to try to sort not only my knee, but also my confidence,” said Cokanasiga.
“I’d been out for a whole year and I didn’t have the best of seasons at the start. My form wasn’t great. I was just forcing stuff, I wasn’t playing the rugby I play.
“So I took a bit of time off and sorted everything out physically and mentally, gained trust back in the knee, and in myself.
“And towards the end I think I was starting to hit back my form. And now I’ve got an opportunity to do it again.
“I kind of lost the reason why I play rugby. So now I just need to back myself, and just believe in myself. It’s really exciting, I feel like for me it’s been a long time.”
