Fans are becoming concerned about the impact breakdown laws (ruck) have on the game.
Ireland international Gavin Coombes sustained a serious knee injury in Munster’s clash with Leinster last Saturday. Munster lost 34-19 to Leinster in the URC derby match last Saturday. Both sides were stacked with internationals for the massive local rivalry at Thomond Park.
Leinster had a two point lead coming into the break following a Ross Byrne penalty with the scoreline sitting at 14-12. Munster were still well and truly in the game at this point, however, Leinster outscored Munster in the second half 3 tries to 1.
Munster number 8, Gavin Coombes was forced to leave the field after 28 minutes of play after sustaining a serious knee injury. Coombes tried to win a turnover at the breakdown, however while in the jackal position, a big clear out from Devin Toner had Coombes land awkwardly with his knee buckling from under him.
Just 3 days following the game, Leinster and Ireland backrower Dan Leavy announced his retirement with immediate effect at just age 27. Leavy who was part of the 2018 Leinster team that won the double in 2018 (Champions Cup and Pro14) along with a Grand Slam for Ireland. However in 2019, Leavy sustained a serious knee injury against Ulster in the Champions Cup Quarter Final at just age 24.
Munster confirmed they will be without the services of Coombes for the first leg of their Champions Cup round of 16 knockout clash with Exeter this weekend.
Many fans have become concerned about how players can sustain serious injury from the nature of the breakdown laws set within World Rugby.
