WATCH: Fans not happy with another ‘appalling’ red card tackle in Super Rugby

Fans were not happy with this tackle which led to a red card in Super Rugby yesterday.

2 minutes in. Red card.

The Chiefs took on the Waratahs in Melbourne yesterday in round 10 of the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season. This was the first game in a new event for the competition called the ‘Super Weekend’ where each game of the round will take in Melbourne, Australia. Less than 2 minutes into the game, Waratahs loosehead prop Angus Bell was shown a red card by the referee.

Referee Nick Berry spotted the infringement in real time, and played advantage to the Chiefs before calling it back to TMO. Once the tackle was shown on the big screen, referee Berry had no doubts as to the sanction he was going to award to Angus Bell. Berry said when speaking to the Television Match Official (TMO) “it is dangerous, there’s no mitigation, that is the only tackler, he lands on his head. I’m on red”. There was no deliberation between Berry and his assistant referees, he knew the the card was ever only going to be one colour”.

The Chiefs immediately after the red card went 10-3 up however, the Waratahs went down to 13 men before Bell could be replaced (after 20 mins) as inside that time, Waratahs inside centre Jamie Roberts was sent to the sin bin. The Cheifs ran in two more tries before the Waratahs would return to the full compliment. The Waratahs did get on the board twice before the halftime whistle, leaving the score 30-17 at the break.

The Chiefs were too good in the end and the game finished with a scoreline of 51-27. Winger, Jonah Lowe bagged 4 tries for the Chiefs, capping off an impressive display.

However, fans online did not appreciate the tackle attempt by Angus Bell and it was cited online as “appalling”.
