WATCH: Fans outraged online as Owen Farrell makes Saracens return

Owen Farrell returned for Saracens at the weekend, however many fans online couldn’t help but talk about his tackle technique.

England captain Owen Farrell returned for Saracens in the Premiership last weekend after a four month injury layoff. Farrell ended up missing the entire 2022 Six Nations having been sidelined with an ankle problem. Farrell underwent surgery prior to the Six Nations which ruled him out of the entire competition.

Saracens claimed a narrow 3 point win over Bristol Bears last Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London. Saracens came away 27-23 winners. Farrell scored 12 points on the day, helping Saracens to an important win. Saracens currently sit second in the Premiership table, 12 points behind leaders Leicester Tigers and 5 points clear of third place Harlequins.

However despite Farrell's successful return, many fans were talking about one moment in the match in particular. In the 62nd minute of play, Farrell made a no arms tackle attempt that went to the TMO. The referee awarded Bristol a penalty, and nothing more. Many fans think Farrell was lucky to escape a yellow card, or worse. Fans were also outraged at the fact that Farrell has not adapted or improved his tackle technique to avoid penalties and cards.

Back in 2018 a video went viral online of Springbok Director of Rugby, Rassie Erasmus showing Springbok players how to tackle like Owen Farrell. Only a few days prior, South Africa narrowly lost to England in the November internationals, with Farrell getting away with a no arms tackle to win England the game. Former England fly half and pundit Stuart Barnes, has labeled Farrell’s tackling as a ‘liability’.
