The fastest try in Major League Rugby History was scored last weekend.
The Houston Sabercats now hold the record for the fastest try in the league's history. Houston lost 29-22 to Rugby ATL (Atlanta) in round 6 of the 2022 MLR season last Saturday.
Houston kicked off into Atlanta’s half to start the game and Houston ended up scoring after only 18 seconds on the clock.

The Sabercats kicked deep into the Atlanta half to put the pressure on. Atlanta secured possession and set up a ruck inside their own 22. Off the ruck, they decided to put the ball to the hands and scrum-half Dillion Smit made a decent attempt at the intercept. He doesn’t catch it the first time or cleanly, however he manages to bat the ball upwards into the air. He then gathers the ball inside the in-goal area and dots the ball down. This score secured the record for the fastest try in MLR history.
World Rugby law 11.4 states: ‘It is not an intentional knock-on if, in the act of trying to catch the ball, the player knocks on provided that there was a reasonable expectation that the player could gain possession’. Because Smit had his hand facing upwards and not down when he made contact with the ball, the referee deemed that Smit was making a genuine attempt to play the ball.
