The Fijian Drua are a joy to watch.
New Super Rugby side, the Fijian Drua, although are currently not getting the results, but sure know how to play entertaining rugby. The Drua took on the Brumbies at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane last Saturday. The week 9 fixture in the 2022 campaign was an interesting battle.
The Brumbies currently sit top of the Super Rugby Pacific table, winning 7 of their eight games. They are 4 points clear of the second placed Blues. The Blues are tied with Super Rugby giants, the Crusaders on 27 points in the table. Meanwhile, newcomers the Fijian Drua sit second last in the table with only one win to their name so far. They are currently 2 points ahead of another new side to the competition, Moana Pasifika.
The Fijian Drua bagged their first win on the 4th of March against the Melbourne Rebels, in a historic first win for the side. They have also suffered narrow losses to the Reds and the Western Force, losing out by 2 points against the Force.
Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for the Fijian Drua who were looking to cause a big upset against the Brumbies last Saturday. The Brumbies came out comfortable 33-12 winners in the end against the Fijians.
However, one thing is clear, the Fijian Drua know how to throw the ball around. It is clear that these players have a ridiculous skillset that other players do not have. The first try they scored in the 48th minute was the perfect example of what they’re capable of. Attacking from inside their own half, moving the ball swiftly through the hands, players throwing offloads that shouldn’t come off as well as they do. Winger Onisi Ratave got over for his first try of the game which was beautifully worked between a number of players. Flanker Villive Miramira played a key role in this score getting two touches on the ball in the one phase and making himself available for the inside pass if needed. The handling was just superb, and a great finish in the corner.
Another example came off a break before halftime. They created themselves a scoring opportunity out of nothing but just squandered it with the last pass. 7s star Derenalagi threw an offload and bust passed two defenders to find himself in space. He gives the pass to supporting scrumhalf Lomani who just couldn't find inside centre Samusamuvodre on the switch. Although it didn’t come off, you really can see the potential of these players to do some serious damage once they gel together. Head Coach Mick Byrne will want to make the most of these gifted players.
