Ireland fullback Mike Lowry bagged two tries on debut as Ireland beat Italy yesterday.
In a game that was overshadowed by a little-known law, for casual fans anyway, the game was a special occasion for many players, one being Mike Lowry.
Standing at five feet and seven inches, Mike Lowry has been in flying form for Ulster all season at fullback. Lowry is a naturally skilled ball player. He’s quick, has excellent footwork and handling ability. He also has a serious right boot and regularly slots in at 10 for Ulster too because of it.
Lowry is one of the younger players in the Irish squad at just 23 years of age. He was picked for the Ireland squad for the first time in the lead up to this 2022 Six Nations campaign. His form he displayed for Ulster was finally rewarded as he was selected to start for Ireland against Italy yesterday in Ireland's 57-6 win at the Aviva Stadium.
Lowry was named to start at fullback for Ireland alongside Mack Hansen and James Lowe who made up an electric back 3 combination.
Lowry bagged his first of two tries just on the half hour mark, Ireland’s second try since the red card shown to substitute hooker Epalahame Faiva for Italy.
Following an uncontested scrum on Italy’s 5-metre line, Ireland had an ideal attacking platform playing against 13 men. Robbie Henshaw crashed the ball up, quick ruck ball gave Joey Carbery the time for Lowry to score. Lowry beautifully beat the first Italian defender to score.
Lowry’s second try came in the 56th minute as he burst onto an offload from Ireland skipper Johnny Sexton who only came off the bench a few minutes earlier.
Mike Lowry also had the opportunity to score a hattrick in the 75th minute but instead, very unselfishly, passed the ball to James Lowe to score in the corner as both players finished the game with a brace of tries each.
It was a superb performance from Lowry who had an excellent game, filling in for Hugo Keenan as Ireland look to build more depth across the pitch.
