Apparently there is money to be made from rugby’s concussion problem.
On an episode of The Rugby Pod, Jim Hamilton opened up about a conversation he had with a person who he was allegedly approached by about an opportunity to make money from the concussion scandal in rugby.
Jim goes on to speak about how there is a sort of ‘pyramid scheme’ set up between lawyers and players to make money for recruiting new former players to the cause. Apparently if ex-players come out and “testify” against World Rugby due to their neglect of players leaving them with long term health problems such as dementia, they can make money off the back of it. Players can earn a ‘commission’ for recruiting new players to testify.
Hamilton says he doesn’t like the way the operation is working and feels there’s “an opportunist play about some part of it”.
Concussion in rugby union made the headlines late last year when the news broke that over 130 former professional players have joined a lawsuit related to concussion against the RFU, the WRU and World Rugby. Former England player Steve Thompson said in an interview that he is now suffering from early onset dementia in his early 40s.
