South Africa drew 16 - 16 with the All Blacks in Wellington on Saturday thanks to a last minute converted try scored by replacement scrum half Herschel Jantjies.

Fly half Handre Pollard made the conversion with the last kick of the game, but the match stats suggest the visitors were fortuitous to snatch just their fourth ever draw against the All Blacks in 98 test matches.

Although South Africa had the majority of the ball in the first half, New Zealand dominated after the break with 71% territory and 67% possession.

The All Blacks made 16 clean breaks to South Africa’s four and beat 17 more defenders throughout the 80 minutes. The reigning world champions also ran nearly twice the distance with ball-in-hand and completed an extra 113 passes than South Africa.

It was a physical game too, with the Springboks being forced to make an extra 30 tackles at the Westpac Stadium, conceding an extra three penalties in the process.

It seems therefore that South Africa overachieved to earn a draw against the All Blacks, but nevertheless this result leaves them one point clear of New Zealand in the Rugby Championship after two rounds.

    I wonder if Beauden Barrett will ever get called out on this kind of thing, because it's cheating. There's no other way to describe it. Watch where the penalty is awarded and where he then takes the kick from. He waits till the ref looks away, and then kicks the ball a few meters towards the posts.       To make matter worse, when Jantjies scored the final try, he dotted down at least 4 meters inside the 10m line, but Nick Berry made Pollard take the kick about 4 meters outside the 10m line. While Barrett's cheeky nudge ahead probably wouldn't have changed the outcome of that kick, forcing Pollard at least 8m wide on his match-deciding kick could very easily have done so.

    Last year in Wellington the match stats also heavily favoured the AB's, and yet the Boks won by 2 points. And in the following match in Pretoria the stats favoured the Boks, and the AB's won by two points. Not sure what my point is but it has something to do with stats only telling part of the story.

      Only stat that really matters is the scoreline. Both sides good in bits. Boks playing a game that will win knock out rugby, but lacks a bit of adventure. Kiwis no rhythm from rush defence. Would fancy boks in a rwc game between the two
