WATCH: Springboks star Am pulls off ridiculous robbery to deny Pumas late try

Springboks centre Lukhanyo Am made an incredible turnover on his own try line against Argentina in round two of the Rugby Championship on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Sharks star was scrambling back in defence with the clock in overtime and somehow prevented what looked like a certain try at Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth.

Replacement hooker José Luis González gave an inside pass to winger Santiago Carreras just five metres from the try line when Am came out of nowhere to steal possession from what looked like a certain try for the visitors.

Los Pumas had yet to score a try in the game but the reigning world champions showed great commitment late on, but in the end Argentina managed to cross the line for a late conciliation try as the Boks took a convincing 10-29 win.

Am made his international debut in 2017 and has since earned 19 caps for South Africa, playing a key role in both the Springboks’ World Cup triumph in 2019 and their recent series win over the British & Irish Lions.

One of Am’s most memorable moments from the tour series was his huge hit on Elliot Daly in the opening minutes of the first Test match in Cape Town.

"It was the first Test of the series, at the beginning of the game and the emotions were there," said Am.

"It was quite intentional in terms of setting the standards in terms of trying to stamp in the physicality from the first minute.”

The Boks are now due to play Australia in round three of the competition on 12 September while the Wallabies were unable to play their game against the All Blacks after New Zealand pulled out following a Covid-19 outbreak, which left Rugby Australia boss Andy Marinos was furious.
