WIN an adidas ball signed by All Black legend Dan Carter

All Black Dan Carter and reporter Meghan Mutrie challenged rising star Fletcher Smith to a series of kicking challenges at Christchurch Boys High recently. Dan got involved himself, and today we've got the ball he kicked as part of a giveaway for RD visitors.

The trickshot videos are part of the adidas launch of the Predator Incurza, and the Everything's a Target campaign. The boot has been designed for superior accuracy in kicking, thanks to a whole host of improved features and customisations.

Former Canadian Women's Rugby star Mutrie, who you may also know from her appearances on The Crowd Goes Wild, spent the day with Carter and Smith, and says that the All Black flyhalf is not only one of the greatest players of his generation, but is a genuinely good guy too.

"I may have misled Rugbydump when I promised a behind-the-scenes peek at Dan Carter from the making of the adidas Predator Incurza ad," Meghan told RD.

"Where a lot of celebrities and professional sportsmen could be exposed for diva-like behaviour, I'm happy to report that Santa Claus is real: Carter genuinely is just a great guy.

"We were on-location at Carter's alma mater in Christchurch and not exactly subtle - between the cameras, the steamroller and the presence of international rugby's leading points scorer, a small crowd started to gather.

"I watched Carter (not in a creepy way, promise) happily sign every autograph and pose for every photo during the nine hour day and not once did he roll his eyes or even sigh heavily or make any sort of comment when he returned to our group. He was good chat, too.

"So, he's a great person, let alone athlete, but it was really cool to see him legitimately nail all of those trick shots without any 'TV magic' - he even stayed late after the shoot until he successfully sunk an impossible off-the-wall-into-a-bin shot."

I think DC has gotta take the place. While he does not have the best kicking stats in the world, there is no doubt he is the greatest all round no. 10 that has ever been. His ability to read the direction of play has lead to moments of not only individual brilliance, but brilliance by his team mates due to his ability to put them into space.

Definately. i think he just can play any type of game. wilkinson could only play well with a huge pack that gave him loads of penalys. while Carter has both the running and kicking game! Carlos spencer would also have a shout but is not as consistant as Carter!

No. The tackling game of Jonny Wilkinson would win over. A team's defence wins titles.
But he would without doubt be my #12 - great with ball in hand and a clinical kicker.

I think this kick shows why Dan Carter is the best no. 10 in the world,

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMXomOLcaJM

The only player who can hold a tee to Dan Carter is Carlos Spencer.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ5-faHlIII

However Dan Carter is definitley a more mature player, he has been proven this by becoming vice-captain of the Allblacks.

I think it's the only fly-half best in the world! The best kicker in history! It has an incredible vision of play, their speeds, quick games, it is excellent! But neither happens only because of that, Dan is an incredible man, I love his personality and that's what makes a person so dear! The everything that might be, always keep your profile! He's very funny, very cooperative! Involved in many charities, this is truly great! Helps many children, will always hold that side to be with children! More when seen in some films to teach teenage boys or children themselves to want more of a sport, to involve him even more in that sort of thing! And especially in the fellowship! He is a person to follow, a person with great charisma and good character, and above all very co-everything! And knowing that he is a persistent, that whatever is proposed it! So Dan Carter makes beautiful use No. 10! That really deserves it and it shows!

Yes, I would 100 percent have Carter playing 10 because of his all around view of the game. He is an overall amazing player not only for his kicking, but for his amazing perception of the field, and he just has and awesome personality that would be amazing to have.

No i can't say i would, as greater player Carter is... i wouldn't have him. I'd most likely have Ronan O'Gara, although he's getting old now and is not much of a tackler or well a tackler at all he knows how to judge the field, use the wind as an advantage, truly is a great players.

Yes. No better 10 in the game both past and present then dan carter. there was shock in 2003 when he stepped in to the crusaders starting 15 ahead of the then great andrew mertens and became a all black that year. but he soon showed his potential and so then became the start of the crusader and all black legacy that is dan carter. he has such a great balance of skills and although hes been somewhat robbed of some rugby and rwc 2011 with his injuries when he plays we are reminded of his brilliance and why hes regarded as the worlds best 10. world record points holder in super rugby and also test rugby in much fewer games than wilkinson and carter has so many more to go. he has such a brilliant all round game when he plays. the way he kicks he strikes the ball so well and so accurately and he is a brilliant playmaker knows when to pop off those passes at the right time or put the little through balls or chips through. directs the team well. has brilliant vision. he can offload, break tackles and make the gaps. great left boot. great defender and tackler. hes right there when a drop goal is needed to win the game. carter is a world class player with a cool head and a brilliant all round first five. i dont think there has been such a brilliantly balanced 10 in the history of the game. sir graham henry ex all black coach said theres no other player that works so hard both on and off the field than carter. hes all class. thats why carter would be my 10 pick. no better option

All Black Dan Carter only just takes the No. 10 jersey away from Jonny Wilkinson - fine margins here!
Both fantastic ambassadors for the game; on & off field. Role models.
Dan gets the nod solely on his ability to unlock defences more consistently.
Both fantastic players under pressure *TCUP*, blessed with talent.

Dan Carter is a true talent, admitted by an Irish fan who's pride has been bruised by New Zealand and notably Carters display of nerve, skill and determination in the recent test matchs. But yet it would be a toss up between Dan Carter and Cian Healy for me, saw Healy slotting some lovely drop goals over in the warm up for the Hcup final in twickenham a few weeks ago. An unrecognised talent in the position of fly-half. Such finesse. Then I've seen him kicking a few penalties in dbrook Dublin at the Leinster training ground. Such skill, truely magical stuff.
I'd let them figure it out maybe through a game of rock paper scissors to decide

One thing that made me wonder when people talk about Dan Carter and his points is how he stacks up against Jonny Wilkinson. He took the record in 2011 World Cup at the age of 29... he is now 30 and has 1284 points to his name.

Jonny Wilkinson lost the record in 2011 and I think he is now firmly retired with 1246 points to his name. He is also 33 years of age..

So there is a 3 year age gap and Carter has 42 more points than Johnny Wilkinson. So in the next 3 years we could conceivably see that rise by another 100-150 at least?

What would interest me more is the % of international games played in their career. For instance in the perfect world minus injuries, you'd expect both JW and DC to have played 100% (or at least 99% when b teams are playing) of the International rugby matches during their career... So DC comes onto the scene they all see he is brilliant, therefore every AB game until he retires is played with him at 10. Same applies to JW.

I only mention this because both DC and JW have been plagued by injuries, perhaps JW was out more? It would be interesting to know in the world of "what if's" (yeup I went there) who would have more points, as I seem to recall hearing of quite a few seasons where England tried out Goode, Cipriani, even Flood (before his latest appearance), Hodgeson? I can't recall how many seasons/games DC has missed though. :/

Probably Dan Carter, closely followed by Jonny Wilkinson and Andrew Mehrtens. Of course the likes of Wales' Phil Bennett is worth a look, but comparing the modern professional era to the amateur days is a bit of an unfair and probably unbalanced comparison.

If it was out of the current No.10's it would probs be dan carter however out of the last 30 years, it'd have to be neil jenkins, such incredible kicking and the first player to break the 1000 points mark in test rugby, its got to count for something!

  • aidanprice06
    6:14 PM 29/06/2012

It would be tough between him and Jonny Wilkinson, Wilk's could deal with huge pressure (drop kick in the World Cup) but then again so can Carter ak=lthough he's not done so yet in an International Contest? So i'd go with Jonny Wilkinson

  • pretzel
    6:08 PM 29/06/2012

Carter is probably not as obvious a choice to some due to the depth that NZ have.. For instance the World cup final, they brought in what? there 3rd fly half? or even lower? And he still played with great ferocity and kicked brilliantly. This is perhaps a huge contrast to the JW era, when England seemed to die a death at the loss of JW to injury, no one was quite good enough to fill the gap, and as far as I could tell he seemed to be the body and soul of that team....

  • andreaitaly
    6:05 PM 29/06/2012

YEAH!! Dan Carter is currently the world best fly half as he shows during the british and irish lyons tour on New Zealand against another strong 10 like jonny wilkinson!

  • alhoppy
    4:12 PM 29/06/2012

If I were to say the best fly half of all time I would pick Barry John, however he does not fit into the last 30 years bracket which obviously makes Carter a strong candidate. However, although he is obviously a phenomenal player and clearly the greatest ten of his generation I would have to say Michael Lynagh would be my choice for what he achieved with Australia, a side not quite the strength of New Zealand in winning the world cup as vice captain and breaking the points scoring record, (which of course Carter has done since.) In a few years time I might conceive Carter to be the very best fly half of the last thirty years and quite possibly of all time, but it would be easier to suggest this when he has retired and we can see how much he is missed.

Apart from a few chargedowns every now and again, I enjoy watching the composure and sublime skills that Carter has developed. His territorial kicking and vision is second to none. IMHO he genuinely loves the game, respects his opponents and has time for the fans. A Rugby Ambassador if there was one.

In terms of comparing and choosing a No. 10, Carter's all round game would edge out the others. As he plays against SA and Aus (more than any other team) every year the points he scores come from opponents with good test/rwc records.

Carter scores tries, makes tries, makes tackles, sees opportunities, kicks well from hand, kicks well for goal and doesn't seem to feel pressure. He does play for the best team in the world, but he has been (with McCaw) the main man for the All Blacks for most of the last decade, so you'd be mad not to have him. As a Wales supported I'd like to make a case for Neil Jenkins...but Carter's better!

Yes. Carter is the best and most consistent 1st 5 ever to wear the 10 jersey. He is so well balanced in all of his skill sets. He takes the ball to the line, makes the breaks when he sees the gaps, reads the game so well, has great vision, has a good passing game, he puts players through the gaps with his weighted passes, his all round kicking game from chipping and chasing, through kicks, punting, penalty's and conversions hes so accurate he rarely misses and he has the cool head thats needed to drop those game winning drop goals when needed. He also makes the tackles, makes the hits and gets back in defence, makes try saving tackles, he gets in the ruck ball, even forces a few turn overs. No better player to have as your pivot directing your team than the legend that is DC.

Dan Carter is probably the most consistent Stand Off in certainly the last 15 years. But is that what I want in my World XV ? Unfortunately that's an emphatic no.

My Stand Off needs to have the flawed genius about him, the spark to get things going when mere mortals can't see it. I have thought about three such players; Carlos Spencer, Waisele Serevi and Gregor Townsend.

These guys in their day would create real excitement in the crowd. A ridiculous shimmy or step, an audacious chip or an unforeseen flip pass. That's why I love rugby, not the metronomic consistencies of Wilkinson or Carter.

With that in mind I have to choose one. Serevi played most of his rugby in sevens and made some impact in XVs as it turned professional, Spencer played in an all-conquering (except at RWCs) All Blacks and Townsend played at a time when Scotland had a lively back row and a couple of really good centres.

I think given the fact he made the transition of playing in Scotland, France and South Africa with prominent clubs I would go for Townsend. The fact I cheered as an 18 year old in the Parc de Princes as he sent Gavin Hastings under the posts for a first victory over there in 30 years or witnessing the way he moved the ball in the Stade de France in 1999 may have swayed my decision. But I'm sticking by it.

I won't rate this on sentimentalism, and acknowledge past great fly halves whom have graced the 'paddock,' but Dan Carter's accolades speak for themselves- Top international test points scorer, 2005 IRB player of the year, Joint top try scorer in the world for a fly half (29,) Record points scorer in a single season in Super rugby, Most points in Super rugby, Highest average score per test (15,) Four times Super rugby winner, Six Tri-nation titles...

Carter would be no.10, has to be no.10, however I'de like Wilkinson/Hugo Porta on the bench (just in case!)

  • paimoe
    6:54 PM 28/06/2012

The funny thing is, Carter has scored 29 tries, the same number as Sivivatu. Obviously most of his points are from kicks but 29 tries is crazy for a 10.

  • pretzel
    6:21 PM 28/06/2012

The thing is though, how has he scored all those points?

For instance imagine if an Italian player donned the 10 shirt and was absolutely brilliant, he scored 10 tries in 30 appearances and had a 100% kicking record.. he could arguably be "better" than Dan Carter who may have only scored 5 tries in 30 appearances and had a 75% kicking record, yet the Italian may have less points to his name because his surrounding team scored less tries than the AB's would... Get my drift?

Actually a real live version of that could be Chris Patterson, he had a 100% kicking record for a long time in one season, and was arguably the "best" kicker, in the game, however his points tally was probably a lot lower because his team scored less tries, therefore less conversions available...

Obviously I'd pick DC over Patterson, but just putting a spin on the "highest points scorer" bit...

  • silvah
    6:10 PM 28/06/2012

Highest point scorer in the world... Do you even have to ask? of couse he would

  • lenulid
    4:45 PM 28/06/2012

I would not have him as my starting 10, that spot would either go to larkham or mertens but he can be on the bench siting next to hugo porta.

  • lucasl
    4:42 PM 28/06/2012

    Dan is awesome

  • pretzel
    4:18 PM 28/06/2012

It's a tough choice, I think the natural choice many people are making is "choose your hemisphere"

SH supporters will naturally want to choose DC and NH supporters JW... I think in essence the SH wins overall, as if JW or DC were not in the running then I couldn't think of another 10 I'd pick other than "King Carlos"... Perhaps Morne Steyn, but lately he has been misfiring badly.

I digress however. I think I would have to hand Wilkinson the 10 shirt, followed by King Carlos, and lastly but NEVER least would be Dan Carter. It is a really tough break and by all means it is a really tough decision, and rather than talking of the difference between first second and third teams this is really a difference between 0.00001 between them all. I think the thing that sways me is how JW did in some ways win the 2003 world cup for England, and as Robert says, brought them to the 2007 final, and perhaps more obviously was how england performed WITHOUT him which shows how he was perhaps a more NEEDED influential character. Whereas Dan Carter, is a brilliant athlete and massively influential, but fits in nicely with the stereotypical winning AB's... I think JW's defence and attack produces a bit more than DC (at half a hairs thickness) again because he has less of a team surrounding him...

Anyway, ALL that being said, can I please have the ball?

  • x_man
    4:10 PM 28/06/2012

    No. Stephen Larkham.

  • cragas

    2:42 PM 28/06/2012

All things considered, I'd let Jonah pick his jersey and then fill the team out accordingly. Assuming he doesn't take the 10 (I hope he puts himself on the wing of course, but one does not tell Jonah what to do), I'd let Dan Carter run it until he gets injured again.
On another note, it's pretty easy to tell which comments come from England isn't it? Never leave London without your Jonny!

  • mikey_t
    2:33 PM 28/06/2012

He'd be my 10 for the last 30 years, and second only to Barry John all-time (shameless bias involved I have to confess). He could probably force his way into most international teams playing out of position at 12, 13 or 15 too. Complete player.

On a side note, met him through a mutual friend on the Lions tour in '05 (painful memories), and he didn't let me put my hand in my pocket to pay for a drink all night.

Carter is the definition of a professional and the world record holder for points, how could you have anyone else!?

Also thanks RD for posting this, my pre-season kicks off next Tuesday and I've been looking for a new pair of boots. Think I've just found them!

  • jerome15
    1:24 PM 28/06/2012

Yes, even though it is a hard decision because there were loads of brilliant Fly-Half these past 30 years. I say yes because I think that great players are always there when you need them, like Daniel Carter.

    12:16 PM 28/06/2012

My dream XV from the last 30 years would have Dan Carter at 10. Jonny Wilkinson would be at 12 though, definetly, and the two would probably interchange a little bit during the game. If they needed a last minute drop goal to win a game, you would want Jonny there in the pocket!

  • cjbruce

    10:45 AM 28/06/2012

Would Dan Carter be my Number 10? Does the day end in Y?! Of course he would start at 10, the man is pure class. Not only does he have the complete kicking package, but the guy can score from anywhere with ball in hand. With so many attacking options, defending against him must be similar to trying to do a hand stand on an ice ring, a nightmare! He would be the first guy on the team sheet.

  • siphoun
    10:28 AM 28/06/2012

The kicking boots belong to Dan Carter : He's a definite all rounder : a brilliant attacker & defender on the field. Always composed, passionate & has an unlimited potential to offer future rugby. Carter's heart is engraved in the #10 Jersey. Thus, he would be a well deserved #10 in my World XV team ! #PureClass

  • possum

Absolutely No 10 not only is his kicking phenominal but he plays as part of Team and seizes opportunites when they arise

  • msilber
    9:31 AM 28/06/2012

Most certainly! There aren't many more fly-halfs that have Dan's leadership and capabilities, and there are none who possess the insane kicking skills that dan has. There is no player who has played so consistently great as Dan has in the current game rules.

  • 79jk97
    9:23 AM 28/06/2012

Yes dan would be my number 10 not only is his place kicking phonomenal, but his ability to read the game expertly and turn a bad attacking situation into a nightmare for the defence is the best the game has ever seen. His running game and leadership is first class and very rarely if ever does he get outplayed by the opposition fly half. Thats why DC has to be number 10!

  • elli_bag

  • diliee
    4:53 AM 28/06/2012

  • bullnz
    4:24 AM 28/06/2012

In the last couple of years, alot have changed -
    - The game has changed (sometimes it doesn't look that way when you look at how SA is still playing, lol)
    - The players have changed (physique, professionalism)
    - Even the ball has changed! (Who can remember playing with the leather ones? That smell of nugget polish on your hands, still playing barefoot at school)
    - 30 years ago there weren't near as many international games as now

You have greats like Henry Honiball, Andrew Mehrtens (was a big fan), Michael Lynagh, Naas Botha (remember, this guy played in the 'apartheid' era, imagine what he could've done under 'normal' rugby circumstances?!), Mark Ella, Neil Jenkins, Johnny Wilkinson...

But let me say this - to have your name mentioned among these greats already is an achievement on its own. The game is now quicker, more demanding on the body, and is now a proper professional sport, so there is almost no room for errors or 'off days' anymore.
Inside the game and out, I think Dan Carter has ticked all the boxes to make a legend, and for that he can have my no.10 on his back.

  • rjm
    3:10 AM 28/06/2012

    12:13 AM 28/06/2012

    No!

If I have to pick a Dream XV, you can be damn sure that I'm gonna put me in it. So I start at 10, I'd have Freddie Flintoff at 12 (good banter) and Eddie Izzard at scrum half (in drag... netball outfit maybe).

Carter can bring on the oranges. Sorry mate.

  • chubb123
    12:04 AM 28/06/2012

In my Dream Team XV of the last 30 yrs Carter would be my 10, there are some 10s in the past 30 yrs that rival Carter in some aspects but none that are as all round, and when making a Dream backline, i'd always start with Carter.

  • warhorse
    11:56 PM 27/06/2012

Carter would be my 10, not just because of his ability and classy skill-set, but because of his tremendous work ethic and the fact that he is a real down-to-Earth and humble guy. He has constantly practised from a young age in order to become the best, and he sets a great example to people in every walk of life. He edges the likes of Quade Cooper and Carlos Spencer because of his outstanding consistency; when you pick the guy to play, you know what you're going to get. Dan Carter will forever be heralded as one of the greatest rugby players to ever have played the game.

Oh yeah, and the guy defies the laws of physics - http://www.rugbydump.com/2008/07/631/midweek-madness-the-dan-carter-freak-conversion

yeah buddy! Always!! defs have Carter at 10!!

  • jackson
    11:46 PM 27/06/2012

Of course. He's not my favorite player, but no one can question his character, his ability, and his record. Only Wilko matches him here but, unfortunately, I believe Carter holds a slight edge over Johnny... So, he's definitely my pick at 10.

  • hallo1337
    11:46 PM 27/06/2012

I would definitely name myself as number ten though Carter may be a little bit better with the kicking.

  • shems33
    11:38 PM 27/06/2012

Dan would be my number 10, he would also be my number's 1-15 but since he doesn't need to be 15 players to own the rugby pitch I'd be more than honoured to have him play fly-half

  • miward
    11:16 PM 27/06/2012

Jonny Wilkinson is my choice for now, we'll see what Carter does in the next few years though.

  • sneds
    11:05 PM 27/06/2012

Yes, not simply for his kicking, running and defensive abilities; lot's of players have those. not even because he has them all; others do too. It's the fact that he so so rarely makes a wrong decision, and uses those gifts at the right time and the right place. That marks him out for me; ability and the ability to use it.

  • chelis89
    10:49 PM 27/06/2012

Dan Carter would be my number 10!

  • billybobsanderson
    10:43 PM 27/06/2012

Carter would be my Fly-half because he is a brilliant player both in attack and defence. He always makes his tackles and passes the ball perfectly. He is the top points scorer and he is still young and there is more to come. I think he still just about beats Wilkinson because Jonny makes just too many mistakes where as Dan Carter doesn't.

  • tubbs
    10:25 PM 27/06/2012

But Carter to take kicking duties.

  • drandro10
    10:24 PM 27/06/2012

  • tubbs
    10:24 PM 27/06/2012

It would be hard to choose between Wilkinson and Carter for me. I think Carter at 12 and Wilkinson at 10 as Carter is also an excellent inside center.

  • lewis98
    10:14 PM 27/06/2012

He would probably be in my dream XV but maybe I would keep rutherford and laidlaw in there instead for pure entertaining rugby

  • bushtukkaboy
    10:13 PM 27/06/2012

Personally I think Wilkinson is the greatest (tough call from a scotsman) No doubt Carter is currently the best but I feel he lacks something - a bit like O'Gara. On paper they are world class but they need a little bit more hollywood about their play

  • youngmax
    10:06 PM 27/06/2012

Dan Carter would no doubt be my flyhalf.

  • parugger
    10:02 PM 27/06/2012

It would be a hard choice between Wilkinson and Carter, but I think carter would just edge him out for his quality ball running and delivery. He is a dominant player against any of his opponents, so Carter all the way.

  • walkervince
    9:43 PM 27/06/2012

    Dan Carter, no question.

  • allen1rugger
    9:38 PM 27/06/2012

If i was picking my all time number 10 then i would have to consider decision making, kicking, (since the last decade where teams target the 10 channel) tackling, and defensive organization. Carter is very supreme in all categories. His kicking percentages are amongst the elite as well as his form in tackles and defensive organization. I can't recall the last time someone penetrated the line through daniel's 10 channel. So yes Daniel Carter would be my #10!

  • npshaw
    9:32 PM 27/06/2012

Tough between DC and Jonny Wilkinson. Both great players playing the game the way it should be played and superb representatives for the sport......but for me JW edges it with his massive defence game.

    8:42 PM 27/06/2012

Without a doubt, scoring over 14 points per game on average, it is clear Dan is the man. He's rugby's highest scoring player of all time, between his kicking and the holes he creates for his team, Dan Carter's unmatched.

  • r-macd-623

    8:06 PM 27/06/2012

Dan Carter definitely number one. Jonny at his peak was better, especially playing in a less skillfull team. Carter just keeps going. It would not be surprising to see him still going in the WC Final 2015.

  • phillipp
    8:00 PM 27/06/2012

Dan Carter should be anyone's starting 10 for all-time Dream XV. His ability to pass, put people in gaps, kick from anywhere, and always make opponents plan around his presence on the field, put him at the top for fly-halves.

  • rolfoosterhuis
    8:00 PM 27/06/2012

I would pick Carter. In my opinion he is a very complete player regarding his skills and physical strength. He can break the defensive line when he spots a small gap.
Also in defense you can count on him.

  • swansealad

    7:20 PM 27/06/2012

Dan would have to be my starting 10. Although Jonny Wilkinson is close behind. Carter offers more in attack and is just so rugby-smart, while Wilko offers great rib ticklers and solid all-around play. Both are truly LEGENDS of the game.

  • tryptosam
    7:16 PM 27/06/2012

  • bigpete
    7:15 PM 27/06/2012

Carter would be at ten - without a doubt. Though there are some fly halfs who might have been better in specific areas, but Dan is a superbly balanced player with great kicking and exceptional playmaking. He's a stellar number 10 and definitely the most deserving of the Dream XV place.

Dan Carter at 10. The guy that said Morne steyn is a complete idiot. and also the guy that said Dan Carter isnt as good as Wilkinson in defence. For some reason people dont realise that Dan carter is a great tackler. Wilkinson was the better kicker. but defensively i'd say even and running, passing and decision making goes to carter

Dan Carter is a fantastic player, and i'd say currently the best number 10 in the world. But of all time it would have to be Jonny Wilkinson, and he would of been everyone's greatest number 10 but he too many stupid injuries!

It would be a tough call between Dan and Jonny but i think Carter would have to have the starting Jersey i genuinely think Wilkinson is a better kicker and probably a stronger defender but out of hand Carter is second to none and he also has the ability to beat defenders and attack the gain line himself he's not just a distributor like most 10's.
