Worcester Warriors have announced that their Gallagher Premiership match with Harlequins at Sixways on April 11 will be a fundraiser for lock Michael Fatialofa as he battles a spinal injury.
The 27-year-old sustained the injury in early January against Saracens, and spent four weeks in London’s St Mary’s hospital, three of which were in intensive care. He has now been moved to a specialist spinal unit in Buckinghamshire, which is being paid for by Warriors co-owners Colin Goldring and Jason Whittingham.
After such a career and life altering injury, a crowdfunding page has been set up for the Kiwi which has so far raised almost £40k, with players from across the game donating. This Family Fun Day held by the Warriors is yet another way of showing support and solidarity as he battles this neck injury.
Worcester’s managing director Peter Kelly said:
“Although Michael is making encouraging progress, the long-term prognosis is still uncertain but it is clear that Michael and Tatiana [his wife] will require some significant financial support.
“By dedicating the Harlequins match as Fats Family Fun Day Warriors supporters will have the opportunity to raise a sizeable sum of money and also show their love and support for Michael and Tatiana as members of the Warriors family.”
Fatialofa himself has documented the progress he has been making since suffering the injury, sharing videos of himself walking with crutches. It may still be early days in his recovery process, but the second row has expressed his determination to recuperate, and the support from Worcester on April 11 will help.
