Young Prop Dean Irvine scores 90 meter intercept try

This is a quick look at a pretty amazing try scored by replacement prop Dean Irvine in last year's Oxford vs Cambridge Under 21 match at Twickenham. Oxford won 31-17.

Two week's ago we posted Rugby HQ's Top Five Intercepts Of All Time and some of you left comments linking to other great tries. One such comment mentioned an incredible intercept try scored last year by a prop of all people, so after a bit of a discussion and some digging, here it is.

The try was scored by Oxford's Dean Irvine, who admittedly looks as though he's yet to fill out, but showed serious toe after intercepting, snuffing out Cambridge's three-man overlap.

Irvine ran the full length of the pitch and maintained his impressive speed before diving in under the sticks for what was not only a fantastic intercept, but a brilliant sprint and finish by a front rower.

Thanks to Will who first brought this classic moment up in the comments

At least this prop won't need to exaggerate the length of run in when in the bar in later life!!! I have seen this player before at school boy level when playing for Wallace High School. The coaches nicknamed him the cat as he had a habit of executing clever intercepts and out sprinting the oppositon!! Good to see a young player use his head and read a defensive situation well

Thirteen and a half stones on the hoof. Doesn't really have the same ring to it, does it!

Or you can search for 'fat man running' on youtube and find some clips that have got exactly the same to do with rugby...nothing.

Different oval ball code -- but this play from James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL Superbowl a few years ago is a good reminder of how special it is when a fat man runs..

During the post-match interview they asked him if he was going to have a pint and a meat pie after the match.

He said that he was a vegetarian teetotaller.

Pah, a try scored for the fatties on a technicality. He's definitely not fat enough to prop. That's what I hate about the modern game - it's corrupting the youth. Sad to see an U21 prop without so much as a single spare-tire. I'm writing to the Front Row Union.

Prop, wing, backrow, whatever, that was an impressive pick off and run back. The guy might not be adam jones, when it comes to size, but he still plays prop for cambridge u21, so he must be pretty solid, so his pace is impressuve. that being said, most centres run about 100 kilos nowadays, hell lots of wings do as well.
